PRESEASON MATCH REPORT: MK Dons 4-3 Chelsea XI (reserves)

MK DONS got off to a winning start at their new Denbigh North stadium as they came from behind to beat a Chelsea XI 4-3 in a thrilling pre-season friendly on Wednesday night.

Liam Bridcutt and Phil Younghusband put the youthful Premiership side 2-0 up inside the first half an hour, but Kevin Gallen's header and skipper Keith Andrews' penalty ensured it was 2-2 at the break.

And second half goals from MK substitutes Izale McLeod and Drewe Broughton – on trial after his release from Chester – ensured Dons boss Paul Ince got off to a winning start on home soil, while Ben Sahar pulled back a late consolation for the Blues.

Milton Keynes started brightly with some slick passing football but Bridcutt put Chelsea ahead against the run of play in the 26th minute.

Bridcutt wriggled free on the edge of the box and drove in a fierce 25-yard strike that triallist goalkeeper David Lucas could only tip into the corner of the net.

Younghusband doubled the Blues' lead on the half hour mark from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the box by Dons centre-half Drissa Diallo.

Younghusband coolly slotted the ball low into the corner past the dive of Lucas, following vain protests from the Dons defence that Diallo's offence had occurred just outside the box.

But Gallen pulled a goal back for the Dons to make it 2-1 just three minutes later.

The veteran former QPR striker stole in unmarked at the far post to easily plant a five-yard angled header past Chelsea goalkeeper Stuart Searle from Lloyd Dyer's corner.

Dean Lewington almost equalised for Milton Keynes when his swerving 18- yard drive fizzed just over the top corner, before Andrews made it 2-2 from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

The Dons skipper sent Searle the wrong way from 12 yards after Gallen had been barged over in the box by Blues skipper Adrian Pettigrew.

Both teams rang the changes at the break as the Dons replaced their entire first eleven – with former Boston striker Broughton taking Gallen's place up front – while Chelsea made nine changes.

And fellow half-time substitute McLeod put the Dons 3-2 up with a super individual goal in the 62nd minute.

McLeod picked the ball up 40 yards out and turned defender Shaun Cummings inside-out before drilling a low finish past substitute keeper Rhys Taylor and into the corner of the net.

Substitute Jude Stirling scuffed a great chance straight at Taylor as the Dons piled forward late on, before Broughton deservedly made it 4-2 from another penalty in the 71st minute.

Broughton smashed the ball emphatically into the top corner from the spot after McLeod had been dragged down in the box by Blues' defender Michael Mancienne.

Sahar pulled a goal back for Chelsea with a ferocious angled drive into the roof of the net in the 89th minute before the transfer-listed McLeod wasted a golden chance to make it 5-3 when he somehow fired against the post from three yards.

Chelsea XI: Searle (Taylor 46), Ofori-Twumasi (Worley 46), Magnay (Mancienne 46), Pettigrew (c) (Bertrand 46), Van Aanholt (Smith 46), Bridcutt (Tejera 46), Cummings, Woods (Stoch 46), Younghusband, Grant (Ferreira 46), Simmonds (Sahar 46). Subs: Worley, Taylor, Mancienne, Bertrand, Smith, Tejera, F. Ferreira, Stoch, Sahar.

Preseason match report: Chelsea youth 3 Malmo U18 2

The youth team began their pre-season fixtures with victory over a visiting Under 18 side from Swedish club Malmo.

The result of the game held at Cobham was 3-2 with all the goals coming in the second-half. It was the first full match played since Paul Clement (pictured) was promoted to the role of youth team coach for the coming season.

Clement was pleased with game, the healthy crowd that turned out to watch and what he describes as perfect playing conditions.

'Malmo are halfway through their season so were good opponents for improving our fitness,' he adds.

'We started well playing a 4-3-3 formation with good passing and movement. Towards the end of the first-half fatigue set in a little but we made changes at the break.

'The intention was that each of our 16 players would receive at least 45 minutes. We tried people in different positions and had a look at some of our new players.

'In the second-half we started well again and scored 10 minutes in. We added a second and were 3-0 up by 70 minutes, then tiredness kicked in again.

'Malmo brought it back to 3-2 in the 89th minute and had a chance on 90, but overall, our quality came through.

'There were first games at Chelsea youth team level for Jacob Mellis, Patrick van Aanholt, Niclas Heimann, Ben Gordon, Daniel Philliskirk and Jeffrey Bruma.'

The youth team are in pre-season action again this coming Saturday when they play Swindon at Cobham, kick-off 11am. They then fly to Malaysia for the Champions Youth Cup with their first game on Wednesday August 8.

So that makes Betrand, Gordon, Bridcutt, and Hutchinson at that position?

What do you think is the ladder for skill amongst the 4?

Edit:
Forgot, Hutchinson is really a RB, and Bridcutt a DM.

So Bertrand and Gordon it is

What about Patrick van Aanholt? I know little of him.

Our left backs at this position are:

Ryan Bertrand (1st choice)

Ben Gordon (just signed from leeds)

Tom Bird (runner up from football icon 2)

Billy-Joe King & Jason Tabor, both newly promoted academy players

+ Bridcutt (CB or D Mid) & Hutchinson (CB or rightback) out of position.

Patrick van Aanholt is a centreback.
