Sorry if this was already posted

The United States dropped two places to No. 30, nine behind Mexico, the top-ranked team from the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

The current formulation is a farce. It's worth criticising FIFA over it (constantly, in the probably vain hope that they'll come to their senses and fix the rampant brokenness), but not worth losing sleep from the point of view of the U.S.'s performance.

Who cares? It's FIFA's ratings. Hell, they had the US No. 8 in the world before WC06, for heaven's sake...

As disappointing as our ranking is, this new ranking system is better than the last. Considering our ranking, what have we done to prove we are not deserving of #30? Maybe the teams we beat this year should be lower than us in the rankings, but think what they have done in the past two years compared to what we have done. After this summer I am sure that we will be higher.

Atleast we can say the top two teams are who they should be in the FIFA ranking.

the only time this rating will count is when it comes time to seed the groups in 2010...

still don't see usa getting a #1 seed, so basically the rating is NOT important at all

right. we could win all our games from now 'till 2010, and still not be in the top 4.

You know there are eight groups in the World Cup, right? :)

If you mean the NCAA basketball tourney, I'd agree we stand no chance of earning a #1 seed in 2010. :D

I think he knows there are 8 WC groups.

He's saying that even if you're ranked no. 4 in the FIFA rankings you're not guaranteed a seed. Example - USA and Czech Republic. Italy was outside of the top ten of the FIFA Rankings at the time and were the seed of the group.

well, we need to know who the other 31 teams will be...

say brazil, argentina, germany, france, spain do NOT qualify, AND USA was a #1 ranked side by 2010.....

i'd like usa's chances of being a #1 seed in a group....how many of the other sides would have participated in the three past cups???

if there are 7 and fewer, then usa chances might NOT be all that bad....

still south africa gets a bid.....i'd want USA to be in their group....it should be south africa, usa, some asian side, and some lower level comnebol side (not brazil nor argentina)...

i'd like usa chances in a group like that

I think it's fair, but mexico shouldn't that much higher than US.

US hasn't been active and really sucked in the World Cup.

What have we done? Well we beat the other CONCACAF team ranked ahead of us for starters . . .

yeah, and played one other game which wasn't even an official game. Mexico really hasn't done much else, except beat Venesuala(sp?).

What about the Mexico match made it any more "official" than that against Denmark?

What about the Mexico match made it any more "official" than that against Denmark?

the very best players (ie those in Europe)were allowed to come play....while we callled only a few to maintain good relations with some Euro clubs in hte midst of the season, Mexico called up most of their best players for Hugo's debut....

the fact that we beat them ought to count for something rankings wise...then again, so does the WC....

The Denmark players didn't even get an official cap for that game.

We deserve it, until we dominate other countries outside of CONCACAF that are of quiality we shall remain quite pedestrian in the eyes of FIFA.

If we win the Gold Cup and the Copa America, it'll put us back into the top 12. Of course, if we could do that, then I wouldn't even care what FIFA ranked us ...

Mexico's higher ranking is mostly the result of advancing out of group and winning some games in the last WC.

I dunno, Cuba jumped all the way up to 38th by beating up on small Caribbean nations... the current FIFA ranking system is just completely screwed up thanks to the "snapshot effect" that we saw when it was first instated.
