what do Iranians in the UK do on 4shanbe souri? cant imagine them going to the local park and building bonfires to jump over them. just fireworks?

and Iranians in the US?

i guess in Iran the mullahs turn a blind eye to it despite their condemnation of it....the public outcry is probably something they dont want to face by enforcing a ban. Sound like great fun. Must make sure one wears something thats a bit fire resistant like jeans or cargo pants....i remember when i was a kid, we were jumping over bonfires one night and one kid's tracksuit bottoms caught fire and melted on his leg.....it was some synthetic fabric.....horrible.....

can anyone take part in it? children, women, christians, jews, foreigners?

do Zoroastrians do something even more special? or more exclusive, something that only they do?

I don't know about US or UK, but in Montreal, in a place called '' west Island '' there was a Sharshanbe souri Party. The Iranians there had already made arrangements with The City to have a reserved area for that day, for fireworks and firesets to jump over. It was amazingly packed when I got there, there were atleast 500 to 1000 Non-Iranians who showed up with their Iranian friends or family. We were in total arround 2000 people. Some night I must say. Also this guy named '' Mohsen '' had setup free drinks & hot dogs for everyone, and firecrackers for those who didnt bring any along.

I'll try to get my friend to send me pictures, I'll post em later.

I have not been too active in Iranian societies but did hear that there was a huge concert by DJ Alligator (the biggest outside Iran as they called it) and people just got together and had some fun. Not sure if there are too many fires for people to jump over or even fireworks.

This custom might have its origins in Zoroastrianism, but there are not many who look at that way nowadays in Iran. Sure everyone takes part and there isn't so much "criticism by the mullahs". You seem to think that Iranians have very segregated Jewish/Christian/Muslim/Zoroastrian societies, but that really isn't the case. And the only time there is any outcry against it is when some get carried away! I have heard horror stories of the kind of shit that people actually get up to. For Guy Fawkes (bonfire) night in the UK, a lot of organisation goes into it and there is a lot of restrictions to prevent stupidity with fireworks, and there are still injuries so imagine in Iran despite all the warnings, how many serious injuries there are every year!

I do advise anyone to actually go visit Iran to stop thinking of it as a scholar said before visiting that he thought of it as a Muslim North Korea which is far from the truth.

And if you didn't know, this is the festival to celebrate the last Wednesday before the Persian new year. Again, that is what would be called in the West as a Pagan festival, but it is far more celebrated by Iranians than the Eid (official Muslim festival).

Iran is its own amalgamation of religion and culture.

Mullahs are against 4 shanbe soori because of what it represents not because of safety issues . Don’t try to twist things and give him a false impression . If the government recognized this day as an holiday and had organized celebrations then things wouldn’t get carried away.

Where do you get this from?

Originally, there were attempts by the government (allegedly) to make the country more Islamic and hence to celebrate Muslim Eids and phase out Norouz, however that didn't quite work! Norouz in fact became more popular and now, I would have thought there is not a single mullah who thinks of removing Norouz/4shanbe soori as a possibility! But on the other hand, do you actually know what kind of shit goes down in some of the 4shanbe soori celebrations?

I will also say this, valanjak, you always like to turn things political and by now you should have realised I have no interest in getting into lengthy discussions with you, so I'll make no further comments on this issue.

Ayatollah Bob stop it with your propaganda . The mullahs if they could have it their way they would ban Norouz , 4shanbe soori all together but they cant because of the people in Iran . They never recognized 4 shanbe soori in the calendar but they sure do recognize the death of every imam on the calendar. Every year before 4 shanbe sorri they show images of the injured and the dead of last years celebrations to discourage people from celebrating this event . If you believe that the mullahs recognize 4 shanbe soori then why don’t they try to have organized celebrations so that less people would get hurt?

And don’t accuse me of turning this into a political thread. Go read your own reponse to the Korean poster , you turn this thread into polticals . And you have no further comments beca
