Jews in Nice who want to buy an apartment have to pay an added fee of €900-€7,000 to skirt an outdated Vichy government law still on the books which prohibits them from owning apartments in that city...

Is it even possible to answer such stupidity ? The french constitution (wich is probably the most non-religious of all western countries) makes this completely unthinkable. I'm starting to be sick with this neverending (and obviously ridiculous) Karl Rove-like propaganda, and I think the mods here should :

1) erase the thread.

Rules are never applied in Nice. That's why this law has never been needed to be changed...

there are lots of laws on the books in the states too that are just as ridiculous...

that said, this law doesn't need to be repealed (except for symbolic reasons) because there are plenty of others in place that supercede it.

the endless attempts to make france appear anti-semitic are hopelessly off-base... how many jewish US presidents have there been?

first of all, YB's avatar today shows that he knows he's trolling, and he does it in a humorous sense. i'm getting to know him well enough to realize that.

and why be afraid of this issue? france has things to be ashamed, but a lot more to be proud of when it concerns judaism in france. i think this is an excellent topic... for those who know what they're talking about, which generally excludes the JP. :rolleyes:

Feminists could get a shot at France too, since there is still a Napoleon ear law forbidding women to wear pant in France, but nobody even pay attention to those legal oddities. There are enough reasons to bash the French government without having to look for non relevant antiquities and details. It is important to remove this municipal law (that, should it be reminded, has almost no legal value), but I'm still wondering why this should concern the Jpost.

Ok. I probably was a little to angry. I agree : Yankbastard is not a troll. It's just that sometimes, he happens to be very annoying in his unique sort of way.

But how could you possibly take this article seriously ? If France was still under an apartheid regime, don't you think some people would have noticed this earlier ? If such a law existed (and I'm sure it doesn't), it would take 10 seconds to the worst lawyer of all to tear it in shreds. And if, for some reason beyond human comprehension, it was still enforced, the European Court would fall on us like a ton of bricks.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe a single sentence in this article. Lord knows the french laws are complicated, but the idea that Jews could be required to pay more than other people, for anything, anywhere in France is simply ludicrous.

And if it's an old law, it means it is not enforced anymore. Vichy laws have been automaticaly repealed in 1944. A brand new constitution was written in 1946 (IV Republic), which was itself repealed in 1958 (V Republic). So, the whole thing is massive bulls**t. I should find an old constitution from XIX' century in Alabama and write an article too :

"TRUTH : black people don't have any rights in the USA ! Is Georges W. Bush responsible ?"

Or find some chronicle from the IX century and write another article from it :

"FACT : Bloodthirsty Vikings have invaded France ! Should we launch a preventive strike on Denmark to prevent such behaviour?"

I don't know what kind of newspaper this is, but they should take the time to open some dictionary at the word : "History".

I'll bet there are a million similar laws in the US. Blue Laws dating from antiquity that have been ignored and nobody bothered to repeal because precident or other laws have superceded them. Isnt oral sex illegal in a lot of states? :D

You're right. There's actually a law like this where I live pertaining to almost the same thing. It applies to Jews and blacks if I remember correctly, but it's not enforced. The reason why it's never been taken off is more about bureaucracy than anything, instead they just passed an amendment saying not to enforce it or something to that affect.

it dawned on me yesterday that my first boss here is not only jewish... he's from nice! and not only is his family home there, his brother is a notary public... so i talked to him about this and he'd never heard of such a law. he's sure there are other ordinances that supercede this prohibiting any kind of discrimination, but he feels, and i agree, in view of history, that it would be fitting for a specific and explicit repudiation of this ordinance be passed.

on the larger issue, while he finds shocking and laughable the frothing claims that france and all of europe is virulently and fundamentally antisemitic, he does resent that there is no place in france where one can purchase decent bagels.

i pointed out to him that this could hardly be termed antisemitism, as everyone knows that it was marco polo who brought us the bagel from china!

My mother-in-law is Jewish and has never had to pay extra for her place. The law may be there, but it certainly isn't enforced.
