If you were the GM of the new Phoenix Rising team, who would you absolutely have to get to build your team around? While dreaming is what this thread is about, please keep it fairly realistic. Lots of possibilities and should be fun to read everyone's responses.

I would probably go with Luciano Emilio (great pickup by DC United), Jeff Cunningham (still just 26) or Michael Bradley (because of his age and upside..even though his now in the Dutch Eeredivisie). Hard to look past the hometown here, Pablo Mastroeni, but he's getting old...quick!

How about the Coach?

I would like to see a Phoenix team follow the mold of the Houston Dynamo (San Jose Earthquakes). Sure they have Brian Ching and Dwyane DeRosario which are well known players. However, neither were well known prior to signing with San Jose. They play the ultimate team game led by Dominick Kinnear.

With that said, I would love to have a team in place to try and get Pablo down here to finish his career if possible.

Speaking of coaches, what ever happened to Tom Hankinson (Mutiny, Rapids.)

I'd like to see how John Spencer matures s an assistant coach with Chivas. Of course if doesn't work out with the USMNT, Peter Nowak might be available after the 2008 Olympics...

Pete Leebrook!! Seriously though, there are several good coaches out there. Fernando Clavijo would be good. Great with the fans and player development. I'm sure gilmore would support him.

Clavijo would be good, but he is locked up for a while in Colorado and doing a fine job there! Thus, I wouldn't see this happening assuming we gain a franchise here anytime soon!

I would have to think that any MLS team (Not just Phoenix) would want to talk to the following three the next time they have a coaching vacancy:

a. Laurie Calloway - Current HC at Rochester. He was the San Jose Clash HC in 1996 when the league began and was there for a few seasons. He has worked his way back up to a nice position in Rochester of late.

b. John Murphy - Current AC for the Colorado Rapids. He is a solid American coach that will get an MLS HC job someday.

c. Bob Lilley - Current HC for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Has an excellent record in the PDL for many years and is an excellent manager of the game.

I am sure that there are a lot of other fine coaches that have, or are in the process of working their way up the ladder. However, these three are all solid and would do well at the MLS level, in my opinion.

Paul Mariner - Assistant Coach @ New England

Mariner is a nice guy and excellent AC. He has already lived here in the area and worked for SC del Sol for a few years...

Easy boy... I don't have anything negative to say about Mariner...

I just don't know if he is ready to be a HC.

Personally, I would like to see someone who has worked their way up the ladder and who has many years of experience at the college and/or professional level. Additionally, I would like to see someone who has multiple years of USSF "A" license experience and is tapped into the USMNT system.

Mariner is a fantastic guy and maybe someday will be ready but I still think he is 2-5 years away.

There a list of MLS coaches that don't even come close to what you are asking for: Peter Nowak being the poster child, Preki, Frank Yallop, and Steve Nicols was a head coach of the Boston Bulldogs (PDL) before a couple of years as Assistant Coach. All were fine players.

Now I would assume that one of the requirements of being a head coach in the top league is to have the "A" coaching license....

My comment per Paul Mariner is that here is someone spoken very highly of, who has been with the Revs 3 or 4 years, worked under arguably the best coach in MLS, and he actually has ties to Phoenix. Until someone else comes along, I'm penciling him in...

But Preki (1 year as an assistant), Nowak (0 years), and Yallop (a couple of years) also came into existing teams. Nicol is the exception to that since he doesn't really fall into that category as someone who jumped into the role straight from playing.

I think what gilmoreaz is looking for is someone with the ability to lay the foundation for long term success.

Nowak did a good job cleanup up the wreckage left by the Ray Hudson years, and Yallop did wonders in righting the ship in San Jose. But the big parts were already there.

Look how Ellinger is floundering up at Salt Lake. Don't need to make that mistake in Phoenix.

That said, I think Mariner jumped to the top of the MLS assistant coaches list after Soehn replaced Nowak.

This thread was intended to be for players not coaches. Leave that for another thread. C'mon fellas, back to task please....

Well, I commented on the coaches because talking about actual players is putting the cart well before the horse. (Even more so than the brand of condiments that'll be available at the concession stands).

Types of players (character, style, etc), that's a different story, but trying to fill out a roster on the dream of being an MLS team at somepoint in the future is slightly delusional.

Please read the topic of the thread, "Player to Build Around"...

If the topic was, please generate a roster for a potential Phoenix MLS team, then ClubGarcia would be delusional. But that is not what he was asking for when starting the thread.

If afforded a team here, I would like to see two players to build around:

1. A prominent player that has been a professional for 6-8 years and can serve as a role model. Preferably, someone with national team experience.

2. A young American, perhaps from the U20 team that has serious potential that can learn from the player mentioned above.

Regardless, naming an actual player or players is a fruitless
endeavor when there's a lot more bigger pieces that would need to fall in place.

Those are types of players, not actual players, now you're talking about the overall philosophy, direction, and character of the club.
