Looks like the USMNT may be without Donovan for the next two tournaments, and most definitely for Copa America. I'm sure this will bring out the LD supporters and bashers.

Donovan stopped short of saying that he has told U.S. interim manager Bob Bradley that he would not play in both important tournaments coming up. But Donovan says the two have talked about it and Bradley definitely knows the Galaxy attacker would prefer to limit his summer international duty.

the guy's earned a break and there's no reason for him to play in both tournaments.

of course, people on here will spin it that he has no heart. if dempsey said it they'd praise him for 'wisely saving his energy like a true professional. what a player!'

Ha. Just read the article.

Donovan doesn't want to play in "both", which is different from Donovan doesn't want to play in "either".

It neither says nor implies this. It says that the USMNT will be without Donovan for ONE of the next two tournaments. The same can be said for every other player in the national team pool.

The article confirms that BB will be using non-overlapping personnel. There had been murmurs in BS and in the media about a few players playing in both tourneys; so this confirms that's not the case.

Wanna take a guess at which tournament that will be? Gold or Copa. I say Gold

It most definitely implies this is possible:

Donovan stopped short of saying that he has told U.S. interim manager Bob Bradley that he would not play in both important tournaments coming up. But Donovan says the two have talked about it and Bradley definitely knows the Galaxy attacker would prefer to limit his summer international duty.

This is why I said:

No, it doesn't. You're absolutely reading it wrong.

The article implied LD wouldn't play in both tourneys. It didn't say he wouldn't play in any of them.

Nice selective editing.

"Both tournaments have appeal," Donovan said of this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America. "But I don't want to be gone from my team that long."

It doesn't sound like that's going to be a problem, since Bradley has said he wants to use two completely different groups for the two tournaments. On the other hand, if the manager did lean on anyone for double duty, Donovan would be a perfect candidate considering his important place in the national team picture going forward.

No, it doesn't. You're absolutely reading it wrong.

What does "it" mean in, "Donovan says the two have talked about it"? The only thing "it" can mean is him not playing in both tournaments. If they are talking about it, then most definitely it is a possibility.

Nice selective editing.

It's not selective editing. It's the paragraph from the article. If the author wrote it wrong, then you should be blaming him, not me for relaying what he wrote.

I am blaming you for purposely ignoring the context of the article you pulled those quotes from.

"both" vs. "either"

The author clearly means "both". You mean "either".

The author is correct.

I'm not ignoring the context. I think the article implies that he will most likely miss just Copa America, which is consistent with what I said. I don't see how you can say that if LD has talked to his coach about not playing in both tournaments, it is not a real possibility. I don't know many players that talk to their coach about things that have no chance of happening.

I have no idea if you are really this thick or if you are just trying to stir the pot. I am going to assume the latter.

No, I'm not trying to stir the pot. I guess I'm just that dumb. After re-reading the quote I believe Baysider is correct and this is an either, both issue. The way the sentence is written it's still confusing to me which should be used. If I am wrong than so be it. It won't be the first time or the last.

i agree, the author meant "both" and not "either". could be confusing to anyone on any given (off-)day. heck i'm still all discombobulated from this whole DST a few weeks early thing...

as for the gold or copa for landycakes, i'd say gold also. especially since 2 outta the 3 games is right in la (not to mention bb said gold is the priority).
