It's a fair comparison. Giggs never has had any international success, while Figo has done well for Portugal. But Giggs chose to play for Wales and not England and he could have been an incredible part of the English side at WC 1998 and 2002. Club wise, both have won many trophies but Figo has won player of the year and had better luck with injuries. I'd give the nod to Figo. It will be more interesting to compare Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo a few years down the road.

If we are making an XI of our generation then Giggs and Figo would be the two wingers.


Ryan Giggs is the best winger of our generation and Figo a close second. Both are locks when doing a best XI or recent times. I rate Figo highly but Giggs simply had it all and showed that against the biggest sides and particularly Europe. Watching Man Utd in Europe was all about watching Giggs torment whatever defense he was up against and it was a joy to behold, although Juventus fans must be feeling sick about now. When you look back at highlights of his career you see him running at top speed with the ball straight at defenders, going this way and that, changing feet, nutmegs, doing tricks and then either setting something up or finishing it himself (either feet, inside or outside, chips, headers, drives, volleys, flicks, freekicks). That's before you take into account his achievements, the records he has set or the influence had over his entire career. The only blotch on his record is that he played for Wales and wasn't able to get them into a major competition. Christiano Ronaldo has a lot to learn.

That's not even taking into account his great form this season. No doubt the Portugese brigade will put forward their defense of Figo and I will enjoy reading it. The debates usually come down to individual honours and international performances, both of which do not help Giggs (which is the reason the fans of Figo turn the debate into that). Either way they are both superb players and hopefully the debate will remember that and not turn into a slagging match.

As much as I dislike both of them (Giggs plays for Mancs and Figo is Judas) after John Barnes they are the best wingers I've ever seen.

So we should automatically discount players who have been loyal to one club or were not fortunate to have played for a big nation? I think not. Giggs has more than proven himself over the course of his career and to think otherwise or attempt to demean him for his loyalty is stupidity in the extreme.

You can say the same thing about Figo. Giggs probably started off younger. but Figo reached his stardom very early too. Figo was rated very highly after winning the WYC in the early 1990's. As for old age, Figo was still the best Inter Milan player last season and his WC performance proved that he can still play. I have not seen much of him this season.

Back to the original question, I do not really know, but I gave the edge to Figo because I have seen more of him.

What I love about Giggs is how he developped as a player as he grew older. Giggs, to me, truly has been two different players. When he was younger he was an elusive speedy skilled winger, much like Figo. But Giggs has aged far better. Figo, for all intents and purposes, still is that same winger, only a lesser one due to age. Giggs, on the other hand, has transformed into a leader, which Figo never did. Some of you may say he didn't have the chance for it because of the teams he has played on. But he could have been a leader for portugal and he wasn't. the 2004 EC should have been his tournament, but he could not play the role he was supposed to play and instead of leading a younger generation, he argued with them. When wingers get older, qualities like speed fade, but Giggs has made up for this by becoming a far more composed player with great vision who can lead his team.

Also, I appreciate the fact that he's a one-club player.

Have you seen Figo play for Inter this season?!

Inter fans are still cursing their coach for not starting him vs valencia.

what you say is correct about giggs, but figo has hardly diminished.

In most matches hes played in hes been inters biggest attacking threat.

This isto close to call, but no doubt both would be in the best XI the past years as the two wingers.
