View Full Version : T&T May Not Attend Gold Cup

T&T suspended immediately all NT operations due to lack of funds. They have notified Concacaf that they may not be participating in the Gold Cup.
Implications for the US: well, I think it makes it more likely that Concacaf would invite a team from outside the Confederation to participate and take the place of T&T.

Why wouldn't the team that was just shy of qualifying take their place? Why would you assume a non-Concacaf team? I would think a Carribean team would step in for them.

How ironic (and said for my T&T friends) that the country of the Concacaf head is experiencing so many problems. The fact that Warner is such an out and out thief just makes this so suspect. For all we know, he figured out a way to bleed the system down there dry.

And they may indeed do that. But in the past they've invited guest teams (like Brazil or Colombia). And since T&T may not have a final decision for another month or two, at that point, some of the smaller federations may not be able to put a team together and fund them.
I think the biggest reason for why Concacaf may do exactly what you suggest is that this year's tournament goes to the Confed Cup--so you want to have all Confed teams (and not a final of China vs. Nigeria in your own Confed qualifier).

Damn, that's unfortunate.

jamaica anyone.
they were elimintaed in the 1st round of Qualfying , the replacement team most likely the team that was close to qualfying, it wouldn;t be fair to St. Vincent and Barbados , if Jamaica was awarded a spot in the GC, if st Vincent and barbados made it farther.

I really doubt that China would play in a major tournament on the eve of the Asian Cup. But I may be wrong as China has been playing a lot of matches this year.

If CONCACAF is fair, the two third place teams in the Caribbean Cup groups would play off: Guyana vs Martinique.
Of course, I expect Trinidad to end up playing in it.

Maybe Jack Warner could loan them the money, I'm sure he has plenty of it.:D

Ah, to quote Bogie, this will be truly a have vs. a have-not.

Based on an article (http://soccer365.com/US_NEWS/Concacaf/page_187_138333.shtml) from soccer365.com that I saw linked to in another thread a day or so ago, Jack Warner has been paying most of the bills for the NT program for the last year or so and has given notice many times over the last few months that he was gonna' stop doing that.....I guess he finally did and this is the result.
...
The TTFF has long benefited from the generous support of Special Advisor and financier Jack Warner and after continuing promises from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to assist in the funding of national programs. This includes the payment of salaries of National Team Senior Coach Wim Rijsbergen and Jan Van Deinsen and other members of staff which is yet to become a practice dating back to initial promises by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Mr. Roger Boynes and his Government since July 2006.
The salaries of the coaches, amounting to close to US$100,000 per month has been paid by Warner despite several promises from time to time by the Government that they would fit the bill. This and the other related programs have come to a standstill until assistance is offered by the Government or corporate body(s) coming out of the many which jumped on the bandwagon for the 2006 World Cup but have since slipped off.
The TTFF notes that dating back to July, the Government promised to second the Ato Boldon Stadium as a training facility for national teams, provide a hotel, as well as meet the salaries of the coaches, prompting Warner to agree that he would pay their salaries until the end of October 2006. Time elapsed without any concrete development from the Government and Warner continued to finance.

Jamaica is the highest ranked CONCACAF team not already in the tournament, so I think they should go. I think they were the last ones to miss qualifying, but I'm not sure.

The Soccer 365 article is useless IMO. Think of it as a Republicans FOX News or A Dems NY Times.
Over the years it has been fairly obvious that this has been one of JW's preferred media outlets. There are more updates on T&T and Capt Jack on 365 then anywhere I have ever seen outside of T&T. All of it sunshine and candy:D .
Jack's Scandals are never reported, while all of his charitable acts have, and so on. Surprised no one else has noticed this. No doubt in my mind he holds influence there.
I'll wait until a T&T fan fills us in or I will wait until I see articles from T&T's papers to pass judgement. Soccer 365 is a Warner fluff center for certain.

Will the Hardworking Bob still line up with twin defensive mids vs. Martinique?
If that's the way he will want to play against the stronger teams when we get to that point, I'd be much happier with him instilling his method of play and getting players comfortable and roles defined instead of just throwing a half dozen guys forward to see how many goals we can score against the minnows.
