i LOVE playing right wing since my crossing is the best part of my game (apparently) i'm just getting settled into the centreback role, but i miss playing wing.

I really like playing either striker or winger (left or right love em both). I like striker because i get to score a lot and take on the GK and central defenders but i love the time you get with the ball on the wing.

On top, at all times:D

On the field, striker. Nothing gives a rush more then stepping over the ball, watching the defender get his legs twisted and trip, then going around him.

for me, defender.

As a defender lemme ask you a few questions

- Do you usually defend an area rather than a person
- If defending on the wing, do you try to force your opponent to the corner and drive them away from the middle
- Do you try to steal the ball away most times or just slow the offensive player down

Right now I am in men's league, playing as a RB, on a 4 men back that includes a sweeper.

1. If the ball is on the other side, being aware of the guy in your area is I think the best way to defend: if you get too tight to him too early, he might be able to take you off the play too easily (and thus you leave space open for someone to run onto). Keep an eye on the ball and one on the player.

2. Force him out at first. If you know you got a lot of help down the middle, then try to force him "in". If he's lefty, force him right (specially if he's coming down his right, your left). Apply the same concept if he's lefty (force him right).

3. If he takes a bad touch, get on him right away. Make him feel you're there: a lot of coaches will say "on his shorts". If you can't anticipate, or force him to mess up, try to prevent him from playing the ball down your area. Making him play the ball back is a very good tool. Give him a little nudge as he releases the ball. :p

Hope this helps!

As a defender lemme ask you a few questions
- Do you usually defend an area rather than a person

This depends on the tactics/formation the team is using. When a team is tactically very good, like the Danes or the Dutch, its better to defend the area; if not the fowards will confuse you amd throw you off by constantly switching and zig-zagging, and have you running all over the goalmouth.

If they're very skilled with the ball, like the Brazilians or the French, you do man-to-man marking. If not watched closely players like them could run through an entire defense before they wake up and realize whats going on.

- If defending on the wing, do you try to force your opponent to the corner and drive them away from the middle

Depends. Alot of wings like to pretend they're going to cross before cutting in, either giving a pass for a one-time shot, or shooting it themselves. Its good to watch him to see what he likes to do. If he likes to cross more, just concentrate on blocking the crosses. If he's more of a fancy dribbler, just play a little bit off him and let him come at you.

- Do you try to steal the ball away most times or just slow the offensive player down
If the offensive players are very fast or extremely skilled with the ball, its best to try and just slow them down and allow the rest of the defense to come back and help.

Alot of fowards(like me) are good at either waiting for a defender to commit to a tackle or steal, and then go the opposite direction; or doing feints and dummies to force a defender to do something stupid. If they're very good, and you just keep calm and contain them, you may not steal the ball, but there won't be much else they can do other than just passing it to another player.

Stealing is better for midfielders and fowards pressuring the other team.

"- Do you try to steal the ball away most times or just slow the offensive player down"

I don't think trying to steal the ball away is a good tactical option. Its much better to prevent possession by intercepting the pass before it gets to the offensive player. This negates whatever skill advantage the offensive player might have. So the choices would be attempt interception or concede possession and mark the offensive player. Like Antonio81 said if you are the last defender (no support behind you) you do not commit yourself by attempting to steal (tackle) the ball. Instead, you pressure the player to prevent a clear shot.

"- If defending on the wing, do you try to force your opponent to the corner and drive them away from the middle
- Do you usually defend an area rather than a person"

Unlike the first question, these are not individual choices but rather dictated by the teams system of play. This is an important point because the defenders must play as a unit to be successful. Your answers must come from whoever is running your team's defense, not someone here.

I tend to play mostly on the wing. Sometimes I play wingback. which ever I like to make a lot of runs down the lines and try to sneak in behind teams Defense.

1.I just like stopping the plays so I'm guessing the play. Does that help answer your question?
2.I drive them away
3.I like stealing the balls (only when the situation permits) or at the very least, slowing the enslaught down when all hell breaks lose!

And what about you?

Anywhere on the front line. I usually play LS in a 433, but also enjoy playing the center. If I have a good center stirker to play with I prefer left because I can usually place the ball on his head or at his feet.

When I can get past the defender that is.

Also depends on what type of game my team plays.

If its one of those bang the ball up the field as quickly and as hard as you can and hope the foward will eventually reach one of them, I'd rather play wing where I can do my stuff and dribble, with the occasional cut-in for a shot.

If they play a slick Latin-American/Dutch/Spaniard slick passing game, I can run on to through-balls from the midfield, or take a pass, turn, and go at the defense.
