First Wembley game to be Under-21 friendly with Italy
Thu 08 Mar, 03:35 PM
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The first match to be played at the new Wembley Stadium will be England's Under-21 friendly against Italy on March 24, according to the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) who will be providing the referee.
Dutch referee Pieter Vink will officiate the game at the 90,000 seater stadium following an invitation from the English FA, the KNVB said on their official Web site on Thursday.
The game will be a test event for the stadium, which has cost more than 750 million pounds, and will be part of the planned 'ramp-up' preparations for hosting the FA Cup final on May 19, the KNVB said.
An FA spokesman was unable to confirm that Wembley would be the venue for the game.
The stadium is due to host its first 'ramp-up' event with a local community day on March 17, with 60,000 people expected to attend.

Gonna have to get me a ticket to this game...

Will the FA cup semifinals be played at Wembley as well, or are they traditionally played at Villa Park and OT? thanks

Traditionally they are played at neutral club grounds (there has been exceptions though). This is (probably) going to continue this season, but from next they will all be at Wembley, as The FA need the revenue to pay for the stadium.

Does anyone know if they're planning on playing the play off finals at Wembley?

yeah, they're not bad, but it's a friendly, so I doubt either squad will have their best players, but as long as theo walcott gets called and plays at least a half, he was very good versus germany, plus I hope for italy russotto gets called, as he was called for the last friendly. some on the italy board rave about how has more potential than rossi and lupoli, and as much natural ability as cassano, but good luck trying to find a video of him, even clips for treviso are hard to come by.
not too mention seeing the new wembley, neat game possibly even if friendlies suck, imo. :)

I thought that was one of the reasons for playing this friendly at wembley, was as a test run of sorts, no?

According to Sky all the play off finals will be at Wembley.
The FA website is a farce at the moment, it let me into the queue and has now chucked me out and won't let me back in.

they are. good chance for Gary Megson...(sorry, Stuart Pearce) to really f' it up with two teams in the same year. Would someone, please, for the love of God tell him to put a suit on, sit down, shut the fcuk up. His constant ranting from the sideline dressed in tracksuit and boots (tell him he ain't a player anymore) drives me....and apparently the Man City players....round the bend.

Yeah its only 60,000, but they sold out in 6 hours apparently so I'm sure they would have sold all 90,000 had they been up for sale.
Shame, I would have quite like to go that. And I missed out on tickets for the Chelsea Spurs replay yesterday!

Are you surprised?
It's the first ever game at Wembley, people want to go just to say that they were there.

Pearce is unlikely to be in charge for that game, only if he gets sacked by City which I suppose could happen between now and then.

Lost tonight....have Boro' (where they haven't won in 17 years) and Newcastle (Where they haven't won in 40) next so it's goodbye if you ask me. He'll be back though, the English chairmen just love them some re-cycled proven failures.....

Alas, I cannot disagree with this. You can tell just by watching him fidgeting on the touchlines that he's not cut out for management. He looks out of his depth like a goldfish in the Mariana Trench.

I bet he'll end up at Newcastle, West Ham or Charlton.

David Platt was intelligent enough to make the grade, he wasn't great but not many managers are at first. He should have stuck at it for longer and he should never have taken the U21's job.
Pearce on the other hand is one of those, like Tony Adams, who'll try and get by on 'passion'.
