'Ryan Giggs' memorable solo goal in Manchester United's semi-final replay victory over Arsenal in 1999 has been chosen as the greatest FA Cup moment of all time in a poll of almost 10,000 fans.

Giggs' wonder strike after an exhilarating run (set up by the wonder pass from Patrick Vieira - Ed :) ) from the halfway line at Villa Park, which kept United on course for an historic Treble, clearly topped the survey with almost 20 per cent of the vote.

It comfortably beat Ricky Villa's own jinking run through the Manchester City defence in the 1981 final, won by Tottenham, into second place.

Alan Sunderland's last-gasp winner to hand Arsenal the cup in 1979 came in third, just ahead of Michael Owen's similarly dramatic late goal against the Gunners in 2001.

The poll was organised by the Nationwide Building Society, one of the FA Cup's five official sponsors, from a 20-strong shortlist of memorable moments.

Nationwide spokesman Chris Hull said: "We decided that we wanted to give every football fan in the country the opportunity to vote for their most treasured moment in the world's most famous domestic cup competition.

"Ryan's amazing goal is a worthy winner and a truly defining moment in the FA Cup's history."

He added: "As an official partner of the FA Cup, Nationwide was delighted to host this fascinating debate. It is a survey which has stimulated many discussions around the country at matches, at home and in bars over the past month."

The top 10 in full were:

1 - Ryan Giggs' solo effort against Arsenal in the 1999 semi-final - 19.4%

2 - Ricky Villa's amazing run in Tottenham's 1981 victory against Manchester City - 11.5%

3 - Michael Owen's last-gasp goal to overcome the Gunners in the 2001 final - 8.1%

4 - Paul Gascoigne's stunning free-kick to take Spurs to the final in 1991 - 6.9%

5 - Ronnie Radford's giant-killing wonder strike in the mud at Edgar Street to knock out Newcastle in 1972 - 5.8%

6 - Dave Beasant's penalty to help clinch Wimbledon's cup final upset against Liverpool in 1988 - 5.6%

7 - Charlie George's winning goal to secure the double for Arsenal in 1971 - 5.1%

8 - Roberto Di Matteo's quickest ever Wembley cup final goal for Chelsea in 1997 - 4.2%

9 - The Matthews' final as Sir Stan finally secured his winner's medal in 1953 - 4.1%

10 - The crowd scene and white horse at Wembley's first final in 1923 as Bolton overcame West Ham - 3.7%

Some strange choices and some glaring ommissions, but then it was voted for by the general public so it was never going to be truly objective (hence Giggs topping the poll).

Where is Jimmy Montgomery's amazing double save in 1973?

Walsall 2 Arsenal 0 in 1933 (The Walsall team was assembled at a cost of £69, Arsenal's £30,000)

Bert Traumann playing the last 15 minutes of the 1956 final with a broken neck.

1971 - Colchester 3 Leeds 2 - probably the greatest post-war FA Cup shock.

On the point or number 9, I believe Brian Clough said it best - "the last player to score a hat-trick in the cup final was Stan Mortensen - they even named it after him - The Matthews Final"

I don't see why anyone would argue that any fan poll could ever be regarded as objective. However, for fine drama and excitement shared by so many fans, was it ever going to be a different moment topping the poll?

Nope.

Nope.

Agreed. It would be silly to argue that a moment from 1933 should be ahead of Giggs' goal.

To expect a fan poll to come out that way? Absolutely silly.

Same way when Cantona won the Best Player Ever for Manchester United. George Best was clearly the deserving winner of that title. But again, fan polls.

All true, but Montgomery's double save (even in a fan poll) should be in the top ten at least.

Maybe a different poll is in order. One that looks at moments in the final itself and then another that looks at events in earlier rounds.

My old mum calling Charlie George a greasy haired long haired hippy b******* in 1971 kind of seems memorable to me :(

It was a pretty momentous event. Arsenal were in the middle of a run that saw them win 4 out of 5 league titles. It was the equivilant of Man Utd losing to a 3rd division side costing around £100,000.

That said, I can understand it not being included. Montgomery's saves being absent from the list is just criminal though.

I've only seen the 2001 game. That has to be one of the greatest Final chokes in history.

Perhaps it is also just a reflection of the age of the people voting.
It usually works out that way in those sorts of things--the most recent event beating out the older ones. Not allways-but usually.

No mention of Essandoh? In the middle of a great cup run by minnows Wycombe, they sign a striker from an ad on the internet/on teletext (Story was never quite confirmed). They're playing premiership team Leicester, their manager has been sent to the changing room. Essandoh nicked the winner, his only goal in his 2 weeks Wycombe rain. Absolutley amazing when it happend, and only a few years back.....Or was that the Worthy cup!? Might have been, either way, quality.

How about John Aldridges Tranmere, had already taken a few FA cup scalps, they've drawn Southampton. Draw away at the dell and take them home, they do 3-0 down, and amazingly, all in normal time, win the match 4-3. Probably the most amazing FA Cup match ever for me.

Note the overrepresentation of the mighty lilywhites in the top 5! we havn't won it for 12 years but at least we used to win it with style! gooners take note, you miserable 1-0 final winners.
(Look, i'm clutching at straws here-its hard to act superior these days. sob.)

The Kansas State University (USA) Marching Band playing prematch and halftime for the 1980 FA Cup Final. I have no idea how they got the gig, and the guy who was responsible died a few years ago. Unfortunatly I missed out on the trip by a year (but I got to help pay off the debts for the trip). :(

Yeah ,gazza's free kick against arsenal was a good one.
Ricky Villa's goal was probably the best FA cup goal.

It was the Cup Final right after Hillsborough, and featured Everton and Liverpool, whose supporters had become closer than ever in the preceding month. Stuart McCall scored two pretty goals to tie the score up, but each time, substitute Ian Rush put Liverpool on top.

Liverpool 3 - 2 Everton (ET)
