Welcome to The Show! On Thursday, D.C. United defenseman Bobby Boswell will join us to talk some soccer and MLS.
The 23-year-old just finished his second season with D.C., starting all 30 games this past season. Despite going undrafted after a standout career at Florida International, Boswell has quickly moved himself into the league's elite players - earning his first career all-star appearance in 2006.
SportsNation Buzzmaster: (1:57 PM ET ) Bobby is here!
-----
robert (princeton nj): Congratulations on defeating Olimpia in the CCC! What are the keys to victory against CD Chivas?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (1:58 PM ET ) I think the keys are to come out and match their intensity. Then we need to play our game and make them play our game.
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (1:58 PM ET ) Just make sure we put out a solid team performance and play solid defense. The rest should take care of itself.
-----
Susan (Tampa): A win against Chivas would be a great way to celebrate your birthday on Thursday. What else is on you gift list?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (1:59 PM ET ) I have everything I want mom.
-----
Tyler (Des Moines, IA): Bobby, are you a fan of any international clubs?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:00 PM ET ) Yeah, I grew up liking and watching IACS.
-----
Rick (N. Virginia): Bobby, I love your style of play. You have the right combination of physical ability and soccer "smarts" that seems to put you in the right place at the right time. I have heard you say that you would like to eventually play in Europe. If you can control your own destiny which league would you go to and what is your timeline?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:01 PM ET ) I really just right now am focused on what I'm doing. I'm not really worrying about the future. I want to play in the World Cup, that's my ultimate goal. If I do make a move somewhere, I want to go somewhere I can play and improve to be in the mix when it comes time to pick the next World Cup team.
-----
Scott (Dallas, TX): Bobby, Will you follow in Beckham's footsteps and marry an ex-pop star?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:02 PM ET ) I am in no hurry to get married. I'm enjoying my life as a bachelor.
-----
John (Boston): The Revs have made it to the Eastern Conference Championship (even passed it), yet they are not able to win the entire thing. What are their chances now with Clint Dempsey gone?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:03 PM ET ) I think the favorite would be DC United. We have a very solid team and I think we were unfortunate to get knocked out when we got knocked out last year. I know we look forward to trying to win it this year.
-----
Wayne G., Brooklyn, NY: I've heard some rumblings about a Bobby Boswell website. Is there any truth to that rumor?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:04 PM ET ) If you go to BobbyBoswell.com, you will get the answer to that question.
-----
robert (princeton nj): Bobby, how do you think the Gold Cup, Copa America, and U-20 World Cup are going to affect DC United this summer? Should MLS have adjusted the league schedule to better accomodate these tournaments?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:06 PM ET ) I think the league has made it a rule that you can only participate in one tournament, either the World Cup or Copa America. We only lose one person to the U-20s. I think the league is right in continuing to play. To continue, it shows the depth of the team.
-----
Kolby Sedalia, Missouri: How excited are you about playing against Chivas in the semi's of the CONCACAF champions cup?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:07 PM ET ) I think it's great for our team. If we can win this tournament, it's huge for soccer in America, for the MLS. It's always fun to travel to a foreign country and play at their home stadiums and see a different culture and a different atmosphere.
-----
Scott (New York City): Hey Bobby, Are you looking forward to the international competitions this summer? How do you think the US will fare in competitions once your generation of players takes over the realms of the team. The younger players now are clearly better than a decade ago
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:09 PM ET ) I'm very excited for the opportunities we have ahead of us. I'm a big believer in our new generation of players. I think we have a chip on our shoulder. We feel like we're good enough to compete and actually win a lot of games. I can't say that I speak for the older generation, but I think more is expected now and are expected to do better and that's coming from ourselves. To take risks and to win games.
-----
Jamaal (Mount Laurel, NJ): Bobby, who do you think is the best player in the World? Ronaldhino, Henry, Ronaldo....
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:10 PM ET ) It's too hard to say. It's tough because you don't get to see every game and the different players that play at the different positions. There are some international guys, some of the Brazilian guys.
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:10 PM ET ) If you go position, by position, it will be different.
-----
Brice (Hermosa Beach, CA): Bobby, being a former college player yourself, what do you think the future holds for college soccer in this country? The natural progression seems to be that more professional minded players will forgo the college ranks and ply their trade in the youth systems of MLS clubs. Do you think we'll see the same deterioration of college soccer just as we have seen in college basketball (with the best players leaving for the pros)? Hope all is well, bud!
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:12 PM ET ) I don't think it's the same as basketball, because the money's a lot different. I think that you can't put a price on a college experience, although I'm sure many parents will disagree with that. If you don't go to college to play, you'll miss out on the college experience. Though you might have a great experience playing professionally. I feel most guys that leave early will miss that experience.
-----
Judy (NY, NY): Hi bobby! I think you're great! What do you think of nicknames? Can I call you RoBoz?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:14 PM ET ) RoBoz sounds stiff and I would like to think of myself as someone a little differently than a robot. The fans in D.C. call me Bozilla. But I don't really have a nickname. Whatever sticks works for me.
------
Erik Becker, Vermont: Soccer has failed to achieve the fan support in the U.S., as it has in the rest of the world. What do you feel prevents this from spreading to the U.S.?
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:15 PM ET ) I think the U.S. has a lot of great sports that the people are supporting. Soccer is a sport that a lot of people didn't grow up playing, therefore it's hard for people to support something they don't understand. But now, in my generation, everyone played it as a kid and everyone understands the basic rules and concepts. That will cause it to grow over time.
SportsNation Bobby Boswell: (2:16 PM ET ) Thanks to everyone who supports me and the D.C. United and MLS. The league's getting better, the players are getitng better. Hopefully we'll beat Chivas and we'll have an all MLS final.

I'm going to chalk that and IACS (nee: AJAX) up to some illiterate intern at ESPN.com.
Or that ESPN.com hates soccer.

Still doesn't explain how a kid in Florida in the 90s grows up watching Dutch football.

That was back before espn2 discovered poker as a cheap programming filler.
And before they hated soccer.

I seem to remember Ajax being everywhere in the 90's. Granted, I spent a lot of time in Germany and Holland in the 90's, but even here in the U.S. it seems like I heard a lot about Ajax.

Yeah, I remember watching Dutch football live almost every Saturday morning right after my parents first got cable. Ajax (or IACS..I googled it too; never would have figured that one out  ) was on just about every week and they were good, so naturally they were my instant favorite.

As a naval architect, IACS is well known to me, (http://www.iacs.org.uk/). I guess the Florida boy has an interest in boats, but what does that have to do with soccer? It must be that Boz sees soccer as a way to get to the UK and closer to IACS headquarters. :D

Yep. Back before HATESoccer™ hated soccer, they showed Eredivisie matches pretty frequently. When I graduated from college, I became a slacker for 6 months living with my parents. I looked forward to those 2:00 matches every time they were on, which was relatively frequent as I recall. I remember watching a young Henrik Larsson playing for Feyenoord and being quite impressed by his dreads and his skills. I also remember watching Earnie Stewart with Willem II and Ronaldo with PSV.
Those were carefree days (thanks mom and dad)
