There's really not too much that can probably be said from a refereeing standpoint without game context, but I figured this video is worst posting, if only for us to be thankful that it wasn't one of us in charge...

Oh, and this is what causes the Inter players to chase the Valencia substitute:

There's a full gallery with some other interesting photos there.

It's about time UEFA kicked Inter Milan out of European competition. Their behavioural record in the last few years has been nothing short of disgraceful. Following on from the year before last, when their fans caused a UCL game to be abandoned after missiles were thrown at AC Milan players and officials, their players take it onto the pitch, and act like a bunch of hooligans/yobs after chucking out time on a Friday night.

And I would think Valencia's place in this year's competition is at threat with their part in the farce. Even if they stay in the competition, they should have so many players suspended as a result, that they'll do well to qualify.

UEFA needs to start getting a grip though. The 2nd Round has seen a near Hillsbrough because of them moving the Lille game to Lens, a team almost walk off, the 40-50 strong melee in Valencia, and equalling disgraceful scenes in Lyon where a player was elbowed, and another kicked off the ball.

Interesting video and photos....only at the very beginning of the video do you see any officials, and there are only 2 photos with any officials in the vicinity. Glad my name is not on that game report.

Was this yesterday's ESPN2 match? No. The Liverpool:Barcelona match was on. And I believe Chelsea:Porto was on ESPN Classic.

There are two very different philosophies regarding the handling of mass confrontations that spill over in a crazy manner, sometimes off the pitch, after the final whistle, etc. One philosophy is, the referees should not get involved since this garbage is not their responsibility and the other is, the referees should get involved since this is their responsibility.

I've read effective arguments supporting each philosophy.

The game was over - the Referee's did the right thing to get out of dodge and into a safe hole! Nothing makes it easier to assault a referee than a mass mele.

Besides, after the match it should be the police doing the law enforcement, not the referees. Let UEFA handle the dicipline, besides the referees book wasn't big enough to record all of the events.

What if a fan pulled out a gun... An ex FIFA told me once of a match he refereed where there was a fight in the stands, a specataor was ejected, returned to the stadium with a gun and took aim to shoot his victim, who he killed but he also had an errant bullet fly onto the pitch and kill a player.

If I am a ref at Inter and I see this happen after the game, I'm outta there. You have to think about what happened to Marcus Frisk (sp?).

I agree -- at some point the referees must draw the line, say 'I'm done' and make no further efforts to break up a melee.

You mean Anders Frisk or Marcus Merck?!

Sorry Anders - getting my UEFA refs all mixed up!
