Hey - this seemed like it was worth it's own thread.
His arrival could be a very exciting development.
From my friend who follows Melbourne:
Very good player for Melbourne. High work rate, great passing and certainly an attacking style of midfielder. Played through the centre for Melbourne but given his ability could go wide. Only concern is that he may not have electric pace to get around the full backs if he is out there.

If you saw the A-League championship game, he and Archie Thompson beat Adelaide senseless. The question is then how A-League compares to MLS, that is, how to relate that performance to potential play here.
Where'd you hear Fred might be coming here?

I saw it here ---> http://www.themlszone.blogspot.com
He had four assists in the championship game, a 6-0 win for Melbourne.

This wasn't quite the blockbuster acquisition that everyone has been speculating about, I hope.
I am surprised a mod hasn't tossed this into the Pre-season N&R thread, though ;)

If Goff says it, it's fairly legit.
I stayed up and watched the 6-0 game. Never seen a final like that before. Fred looked good. Not sure if many of the rest would be up to snuff, but he and Archie Thompson looked like they could hack it here. The Emilio comparison is off in terms of style but probably dead on in terms of contribution. Get him and you'll be tough to beat.

The problem is that the title drew attention because I thought that in the land of pure fantasy speculation that you were referring to this Fred -

Frederico Chaves Guedes
Now THAT would make me sit up and take notice in a hurry!

I am incredibly impressed how DC is rebuilding on the fly. I don't think you will miss Moreno's slipping productivity over the next couple years...brilliant stuff.
Emilio is awesome. He scores, and is so professional by not making big deal vs. former club. I'm already a fan.
I think Arena will need most of the season to get his squad close to you (head-2-head) on the pitch. I think you will lead wire-2-wire
yup... thats the fred i was thinkin of too
Hopefully the thread title change will help alleviate this problem. ;)

Sounds good to me.
Looks like he last played on February 18th. He ought to be in good shape. I won't hold my breath hoping he can help us vs. Chivas. Don't believe we can get all the paperwork done in time.

I would think the more obvios formation would be...
-----------------Perkins
Erpen -----------Boswell -----------Namoff
-----------Olsen----------Caroll
Fred ------------Gomez-------------Gros
------------Moreno--------Emilio
I would hope they don't want Olsen on the wing and the other options don't give us enough width.

Goff saying the teams "finalizing" a deal for Fred.
From everything I read in Aussie press about him, it seems Fred is more likely a replacement for Moreno or Gomez than a player who'd fill in at left wingback. Perhaps he'd play left wingback for DC if he signs, I don't know. It just doesn't sound like that'd be an obvious fit for him.
Edit: The Goff article says he has the versatility to play outside mid. I'm still curious to know how natural a fit that would be.

He maybe able to play the wing on the right.

This is going to be a hell of an exciting year, win or lose. This team is really establishing it's own identity.

I would be pissed off badly if he left :( Can't you go scout your own Brasilians?!?!? :p
Don't know why he'd want to leave though, he'd be playing infront of a huge and passionate crowd down here and says he likes the lifestyle here.. Unless he's just leaving for some more money
He also said he is definately staying if Rodrigo Vargas stays (which he is) so I don't know if he will go back on his word or not.
Hopefully he can play atleast one more season here, going to MLS would be a bit of a sideway move so I don't see why he would move there apart from money reasons.

Don't wanna start an A-League vs MLS discussion but it definitely wouldn't be a sideways move. MLS teams have more exposure to European teams then the A League and also play in more international tournaments/competitions like the CCC or Copa Sudamericana. Its not everyday in the A League you get to play against Chelsea, Real Madrid, etc like you see MLS teams do. He could see a move to MLS as a possible stepping stone for a bigger payday in Europe.
Sure the fans are fantastic in the A League, the stadiums are always packed but that doesn't reflect the level of play on the field, the defensive efforts of the teams I've seen have been very amateur.
