View Full Version : Transitioning from outdoor to indoor

I've played outdoor all my life, and recently joined a friend's indoor league. I play defense, but the two have different styles. Either that, or my style doesn't lend itself well to the indoor game. My style has always been to close down an attacker and pin them near the sidelines, forcing them to make a difficult pass or move. This doesn't seem to work so well, as I close down, and it just gets played off the wall.
Should I just be playing off in a zone? That doesn't seem like a very sound strategy, because it doesn't take much room to get a shot off, and even a bad shot can be a good pass when it bounces back out.
So, a little help?

well, what i did on defense in indoor is just close in on the ball and keep yourself inbetween the ball and the goal.
Most importantly though just give yourself time. Indoor and outdoor are two completely different styles of play..as you've most likely noticed there is a lot more dribbling/one-twos/quick passing. Really, the hardest thing to adjust to is the pace of the game and transitioning from attack to defense and vice-versa.

Well, the problem I'm having is that it's impossible to pin anyone any place on the field. I hate playing off in a zone, but I guess you're right. It's not the pace that's giving me fits, just the placement of my body.

Yeah, keep yourself in front of the ball so the attacker can't get off a shot. Other than that you just don't want to give them any room to dribble and block off split/through passes.

indoor is a hard game to play its nothing like outdoor imo. . . i know some guys that are above average indoor and go outdoor and blow and vice versa. . as an attacking player i get frustrated indoor when i get pushed to the middle of the field because of how congested it can get. . . also when defending a player find their weak foot push them that way. . . if you know they will use the wall anticipate it and just be ready to turn and run. . .
