Thought I'd post a link to this Washington Post article on the fan groups in Argentina. Warning: This is not a positive article.

Argentina's Soccer Gangs Test Limits of Public Tolerance (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/23/AR2007022301677.html?sub=AR)

they should have mentioned how sometimes, it is also the police's fault as they go out and provoke some of this stuff too

I didn't read it yet, but just because it's from the Washington Post I'm pretty sure it's a bad article. They generally lack knowledge on this subject, and it's never good when an outside source judges the barra-bravas. The usually don't name the positive points these guys have, and paint them out to be darker than they really are. They probably fail to mention the assholes the Argentine Police are too.

Edit: Ok, I read it now.. They weren't that negative towards it as I expected, yet they still didn't mention the good things they bring to the club, such as security for the fans, something the Police fails to do.

What is positive about a barrabrava?

What is positive about a barrabrava?

Look.. You can't eliminate barra bravas. If you kick them out, others will take their place. Kick those out, and guess what.. Others will take their place too.. There won't ever be a situation in which no one fills in their spot.

For River, for example, it was not a good thing to kick out this barra-bravas leaders (Alan, Adrian, and 4 other men). These guys had eliminated drugs and robberies from the stands. Violence had highly been reduced thanks to them. Not to mention that they defended the fans when they were being attacked, especially in away stadiums. You can ask anyone who went in the 90s and recently to the Monumental, and they will all tell you they felt a lot safer now. But now, those leaders are gone, and all the negative things from the 90s might return.

Maybe Barra-Bravas wouldn't be so positive if the Police did their job. But since the police doesn't do anything to defend the fans, and keep them away from robberies and violence, the barra-brava must do so.

Check out what I wrote in my River blog about the subject:

locoriver is right.
It may sound pathetic and awful, but sadly it is true.

Here are some things said by River fans in a Boca site when it came to today's game:

there are probably even more on the river site

i think that what he is trying to say is that barra brava's in argentina do anything and get away with it.

as far as my personal opinnion about barra brava is that certain clubs need them and some don't. most of the danger comes from the barra brava, and they cause probably all of the trouble. many don't stand up for the club they support and help argentine's corruption grow. clubs like river and boca, velez, independiente, racing they need them. otherwise there wouldn't be much singing and jumping would there :D :D ....... but they do have a soft side as well. but for the most pat they provide hardly any positive to football.

If the barrabravas would have been broken up there would still be singing, banderas, yelling and stuff.

If you go to the plateas there still is more singing and stuff then in an ordinary game in Europe
