Biggest shame of the World Cup history? Or did it contribute to the myth of the sport? Do you think it best summons Maradona's career? Or do you think the other goal against England in 86 suits him better? Discuss!

Combine them, and then you have Maradona. A tremendously talented cheat. If the Hand of God goal had been called back, I doubt the second would have happened. It was only two minutes later, and England was no doubt still fuming and in shock.

Perhaps, Maradona did score a similiar goal next match against Belgium. Both goals reflected the two sides of Maradona.... he was very talented and got away with things that other could not get away.

Maradona is basically a spoiled brat..... people started to worship him since he was 12. I alway see him as a tragic hero liked a child actor who entered(worshipped by) the adult world too soon.

The build up into the first goal was absolutely outstanding, and many people seem to forget that.

Uh?! "Spoiled brat" is hardly someone growing up in poor neighbourhoods sharing a tiny house with nine siblings!

Yes, he was poor until he was around 12. Then he got discovered. He was considered the savior of Argentinian soccer. he was on TV shows by the age of 12. He might be still poor, but the fans, the press and the clubs were all worshipping him. When he was 12 or 13, he also scored a goal by dribbling past 7 defenders..... on the same goal, he also scored a goal with his own hand.

Does this ring a bell with any Americans here?

WHAAAT? Do you dare to say "Hand of god" is the best summons of Maradonaīs career??
My godness, the things I have to read here...
Maradonaīs career is MADE BY HIS STYLE, ALL THE PLAYS AND GOALS AND NOT JUST FOR THAT, A GOAL THAT WASNīT MADE BY THE HAND.
Itīs enough, agree with those people angry for such an undervalue:mad: and please give a little respect to Diego!!!If you can...
I saw a scene of a Argie movie of 1976 where a guy came to a football field and it was a boy called Diego Maradona playing, the guy told that young boy that he would be a world-star with such a talent. So you tell me at that time people said that for that stuff of "Hand of God" and the rest of cheating things.

Oh yeah, so try to justified that, poor. "Talented cheat" of course, try to invent more excuses. Anti-Maradona = Blind by jealousy people, as simple as that.

You don't agree with 'talented cheat'?

I'm a fan of his footballing talent as much as, if not more, than the next guy.
But add to the handballing, his little misdemeanour at the '94 WC and we start realising that '(incredibly) talented cheat' is a little closer to the truth.

maradona is one of, if not the, greatest players to ever take the field. but some of his choices and decisions, on and off the field, have left many people with a bad feeling about him. which is tragic....he was an incredible footballer...

No. That would be Schumacher's assault on Battiston in the '82 semis. He didn't even get a card. The second was the Austria-W. Germany first round fix.

The second goal is what's important. People need to get over the Hand of God goal. A Belgium-W. Germany World Cup final might have been even more of a crime.

Ummm...no. NO. It's tragic when your talent is overshadowed due to things out of your control. It's reality when your talent is overshadowed because your ethics and personality. The man is a twat, end of discussion.

You're right. A guy who a uses his hands to score in a freaking soccer game is not a cheater.

What was I thinking?

The 'Hand Of God', and the other goal summed up Maradona totally. A footballing genius who also cheated and got away with it.

There have been several outrages at different World Cups. Schumacher V. Battiston, Austria V. W Germany, Peru V. Argentina, and Holland V. Argentina (blatant match-fixing between officials and the Argie regime). The 'Hand Of God' incident is nothing more than a footnote.

After Belgium had obviously swept England aside in the semis.
Ah well, here's to dreams.
