i have been playing around with sketchup... and am starting to come together with a design for a stadium (roof needs to be done, that flat thing is just to check sightlines)... I need a general consensus on what color scheme you guys want (the other thread seemed to indicate blue/(white,orange,yellow, and or silver) was prefered)
http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/gunnerso/shared/AC_StLouis_MLS_Stadium.jpg
Here is the location of the stadium:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=38.629678,-90.173464&spn=0.00761,0.020084&t=k&om=1
YES, I know East St. Louis is the land that god forgot, but its right next to a rather large parking lot (with a casino/hotel attatched), 50' from a transit stop, right on historic Eades Bridge, a short train ride (or even a manageable walk) from the arch and the Landing... and eventually there will be some sort of platform or restaurant I'll draw into my design that should offer a sweet view of the skyline and arch.
If you don't like the design of the stadium or the location... TOO BAD!!! ...
actually, any input would be appreciated...
some features of the stadium:
-Somewhere around 22-24,000 seats... plus whatever the skyboxes can hold
-two level of skyboxes (and press box)
-like a lot of british stadiums, the field sloaps down around the edges with a "moat" around the field for game personnel... this allows the first row of seats to be at field level, close to the field, and still allow for an overhanging balcony

ooooo.....that got the blood going a little bit just to see a stadium built for us. Anyways, I think right now we want a green team in the MLS (LA isn't green anymore) so maybe the green and yellow combo?
I would love to see a stadium that has some special feature architectually that will bring fans to games just to see a stadium. NOT a glorified high school stadium. I like the sketch so far, it's still fun to dream.

I thought this was going to be about the ketchup bottle. ;)
Anyway, beautiful work.
I like the Green/White or Green/Yellow color scheme.
BTW, can you "pitch" the field like a proper pitch should be?

Color schemes (I'm going with St. Louis Athletic Club, the near sideline with say "ST LOUIS" and the endzone will say "STL AC")

First off, what is with the obstructed views? But good work, it is cool to see something. We still don't have a team yet? At times it seems so real...
Secondly, for a long time the momentum was for blue/gold or yellow in the mold of the Blues and Rams. But over the last month there has been a huge push in the direction of green/white or green/gold. Right now the favored nickname seems to be St. Louis Knights, but that changes on a regular bimonthly basis.

I figured most people wouldn't like the obstructed views... I'm a big fan of "unique" design elements for stadiums... It would take me like 1 minute to chop those off and make something that supports the roof from above... I just like playing around with sightlines.

That's the "Away" section ;)

That Green/White looked nice - Now, I'm leaning towards St. Louis Shamrock, Celtic St. Louis, St. Louis Hibernian, etc. - I'm sure that will change by tomorrow.

I'm with you. I really like the green and white look. I also mentioned in a thread from about a year ago that I think a kind of "Fighting Irish" equivilent could be good for MLS. Just as there are tons of Notre Dame fans out there, there are tons of haters. To me, that would only be good for MLS to have something like that. It could be great for the St. Louis club because it could mean a wider base to sell merchandise. Some may argue that an Irish themed name limits the team's fanbase to one ethnicity, but I believe that to be inaccurate. Notre Dame doesn't only have appeal to people of Irish decent, it seems to have a special appeal to Catholics in general. With St. Louis having such a huge Catholic population, I think a team could capitalize on that while still having a wide enough appeal to the general public. Really, look at St. Louis soccer and you see Catholic institutions from grade school to College (Saint Louis University) leading the way.

The open end of the stadium wouldn't facing West now would it IlliniOnFire? That would afford an excellent view of downtown now wouldn't it?

I looked at the actual location you proposed, and it is literally across the river from the Arch. Is this considered a really bad neighborhood, all stereotypes of East St. Louis aside? Someone could stick a boat next to the stadium and make a profit. Of course, I have no idea what IL gaming laws are like, but the stadium woulc create an awesome view of downtown.

This is not really a "neighborhood." It's mostly industrial. It's only "really bad" because that's where the bodies are dumped - they are usually killed elsewhere - hope that offers a little comfort. ;) :p

Actually... one step ahead of you..
there already IS a gambling boat RIGHT next to the site.. (and a second one right across the river on the Missouri side)
Whenever I am in St. Louis for the Illinois/Missouri Basketball game, I always park at the casino (free parking) and take the train over to the Missouri side and downtown...
IMO, the location is perfect, and land values would have to be fairly cheap (all things considered.)... plus, if it is doing something to fix up East St. Louis, I would imagine there would be some sort of a tax benefit involved.
East St. Louis is a notoriously depressed city, and it is mainly for social reasons... when computer modeling of development in the St. Louis Region is done, virtually all of them say that East St. Louis should be one of the fastest developing towns in Illinois.... but it isn't.

The views would be great, but a few thoughts. I couldn't tell exactly which location you were proposing -- if North of the King Bridge then that would probably be o.k. from a land acquisition perspective, but wouldn't necessarily get you the views you want. If between the King and Eads Bridges (which how the Google map link looked), then I don't think there would be enough room. Also, for both of those potential sites, as of right now a 'coupler' bridge (i.e., second span) of the King Bridge is the only real plan on the table for a needed new downtown bridge. If that were to happen then quite a bit of land on one side or the other would be needed. Finally, if you are talking about South of the Eads Bridge (i.e., directly across from the Arch), then the Casino already owns most of the northern half of that land, if not all, and is currently building a large expansion. The center part of that land has a big grain elevator with river access, and they've been unwilling to sell/move, and ESL hasn't tried to force them out. There is a huge fountain/man-made guyser in the middle as well (http://www.hydrodramatics.com/gateway_geyser.htm) owned by the Metro East Park and Recreation District, which is supposed to be part of a long-desired expansion of the Arch grounds on to the Illinois riverfront (http://www.meprd.org/MMM%20Park.htm). (Zoom out on the google map and you can see a lot of this). Finally, the far south portion is fairly open for development (it is probably where most of SportBilly's aforementioned bodies are dumped, though), but it is not really accessible from the highways.
ESL would be prime development land if not for the stigma it has and the partially percieved, partially real crime problem. I never thought the casino would fly there, but it has done amazingly well. The interesting test case would have been the Cardinals if they hadn't managed to get Busch II built -- would they have built right across the river and would people have gone? We'll never know. As much as I like soccer, I don't think soccer would be the best test case for people's willingness to attend a sporting event in ESL.
Lastly, the perceived successful model for these SSS's seems to also involve youth/tournament fields. Say what you want about all the rest of this, but there is not a lot of soccer taking place in ESL itself, and I don't think the soccer moms of the midwest are going to be willing to bring their boys and girls to a ESL complex. That's one reason why Collinsville would probably win out IMHO, for better or worse. Plus, with Cooper's ties to horse racing and Fairmont Park, my guess is he personally wants it there if he can get the right deal. The bottom line is, we can all state our preferences for wherever we want a stadium built, but if Cooper & Co. can get the right incentives from a city which thinks there is more to be gained from this than they're putting out in incentives, that's where it will wind up.
But, as this started out, the views certainly would be good from there, and it would be great for those working downtown. Also, the stadium itself looks good, and the green/white is looking good as well -- blue and gold would mimic the Rams and Blues, but maybe some variety would be a good thing.
Good work.

Switching gears a little, I found a website with tons of soccer stadia on it:
http://www.footballstadiums.vze.com/
After looking at these, I find the German stadia the best by far, and I hope St. Louis would build in this model. They are just so asthetic and interesting just to look at from inside and out. Many English stadiums look like boxes, and I'm not so thrilled with that. What do we think?

English stadia might not be so aesthetically pleasing, but the atmosphere inside is brilliant. I don't want a bowl. And we certainly haven't got enough money for a state-of-the-art german-style stadium. I say we go with what the fantastic sketch-up work shows, except I'd rather there not be a moat, and have it like Highbury or many other old stadia, where there is very little space between the stands and the pitch. Wouldn't it be fantastic seeing a stadium like that in MLS?

First: Where do I get this Sketchup, and do I need to be a genius to use it.
Second: I still stand by the idea of navy/sky blue.
