Close to the 2 min mark in this clip there is an interesting sequence of events..

The Everton striker Anichibe is chasing a ball over the top with the Spurs defender. The AR on the far side is flagging for a foul on the Everton player and at the same moment the Spurs defender is pulling the Everton player to the ground. Even though I am a Toffee Supporter, there is really no CLEAR evidence of a foul by the Everton player. A free kick to the attackers is awarded which sets the Spurs players off. Uriah Rennie (who seems to have had some run this season) cards the defender, and then decides to check with his AR. After a chat, the CR's initial call stands, and Arteta compounds Spurs misery by putting the free kick into the net to tie the game!

The announce team gets it all wrong (as usual) but here is my quandry...

Rennie has decided to go with his own view of the play over the AR which is his divine right. But what would have happened to the card IF after it had been issued, Rennie walks over to the AR and the AR convinces him that the first foul happened before the 2nd foul? Does the CR make a signal? Does the card stand?

Whether the card stands depends on exactly why it was handed out. Most yellows would likely stand since they are handed for either overly physical/risky plays or simply cynical plays (which covers blatant holding). No reason to change the card.

About the only card I could see being revoked in any real numbers is a DOGSO or DOGSO-H red, where if the play should have been blown dead because of an earlier foul or offside, etc... the "OGSO" criteria simply doesn't exist. Even here, often the red would be substituted for a yellow but it depends on the underlying foul.

Interestingly, this is the same combination that caused controversy at St James' Park when either or both Uri Rennie and Nigel Bannister decided Scott Parker wasn't interfering when he stepped over the ball against West Am. ;)

I didn't realize it was the same AR. How often do the the CR's work with the same ARs?
