the title says it all.
I am in need of, and I do not believe I am asking this, an MLS "soccer" team to follow in the EPL offseason.
What do I know of the MLS? In one word: pedestrian. In a few words: It can't hold a candle to the Glory days of the NASL, can it?
Am I biased? I will be the first to admit that I think the MLS is shite, but I am more than willing to give it the benefit of my doubt.
Geographic recommendations are welcome, both near and far, and in that case I wil let you know that I am a season ticket holder to the USL Div Whatever team the Minnesota Thunder.
One team I will rule out straightaway without a good reason are the LA Galaxy. Beckham=overrated IMO, but I may be convinced and am open to, and by, a damn good argument for it...And if Chicago sign Zidane, the same applies.
So, to shorten and conclude this long rant: Whom shall I support this season? Any and all recommendations are welcome.
Note: that it will be a rabid and often ludicrious farce of a following but what the hell, its better to jump in full head first and ride the ups and downs than test the milk toast waters and be drug to and fro' by the glory hunting tides of success innit?

Well, geographically you'd support Chicago. However, I'm a Houston fan and I live in Oregon. I got hooked with Brian Ching's bike to beat DC United in the regular season. They play good football, sometimes grind out results, and though they're the defending MLS champs, you might be able to avoid the label of trophy hunter or a plastic because they only moved from San Jose last year and you're a new fan.
They're a cardiac bunch, really. Beat DC United as I said before. Beat Fake Chivas in the two-legged knockout on a header by Ching in the 90+2 of the second leg. Equalized in the championship in the 114th minute. And perhaps the most compelling argument of all, King Kenny's boy plays for 'em! ;)
My argument is wholly biased based on my allegiance, but hell. That's the best speech I can make.

Been here, done this. :D
I support a club that doesn't exist yet, so it's kind of difficult to make an argument for them.

DC U-NI-TED, clapclap, clapclapclapclap
That's my first choice. Here's what immediately comes to mind whenever I think of the MLS clubs (and if I'd support them if I didn't have a team).
CD Chivas USA- The Mexican club. If you like Mexico, this club's for you.
Colorado Rapids- New colors, new logo, new look. Unfortunately, they play at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, and I work at Dick's and hate it there. Bastards. Other than that, they're uninteresting.
FC Dallas- Something about their fans that irk me. And to me, Texas and soccer don't mix.
Houston Dynamo- Orange kits are reserved for Holland.
LA Galaxy- I really have nothing against the Gals.
Real Salt Lake- Still a stupid name. Does Utah have a lot of Spanish history or something?
Chicago Fire- Despite the hilarious name (think: New Orleans Katrinas), I wouldn't be interested.
Columbus Crew- This is probably the only other MLS team I could support. I just like the colors and the name...and the stadium.
DC United- Coolest name, coolest uniforms, coolest colors, most passionate fans (all personal opinions).
Kansas City Wizards- Boooooooooooooring.
New England Revolution- I hate Red Sox fans. Other than that, a good choice.
Red Bull New York- aka Commercialism FC. I hate what Red Bull did to Salzburg's club...don't like them in NY either.
Toronto FC- Toronto freaking LOVES the beautiful game. Glad they got a team.
Anyway, if I were you I'd support DCU, the Crew, or the Revs.

Support the Metrostars(Red Bulls)
They are just as frustrating as Newcastle.
If I were new to the league I'd go for Toronto.

Chicago Fire- Despite the hilarious name (think: New Orleans Katrinas), I wouldn't be interested.
Great park, great city, great jerseys... mediocre team. They get the shaft by their owners (AEG) who are more concerned with LA. When it comes to MLS names the Fire is better than anything but United.
So since you are a Newcastle fan and used to dealing with mediocracy and poor ownership, the Fire is the team for you.

Support the Galaxy. You'll have more fun when you fly in to LA for games. Plus any team that ToonUSA likes must be good.:p

OK so after rooting through a whole bunch of ridiculous stats and the like in regards to the whole player classification, weird playoff systems, fan sites and boards here on Big Soccer, and in addition weighing heavily the comments and concerns I received here, I have come to the conclusion that I must have been extremely drunk when I started this thread, because can barely find an attractive MLS team to follow.
I have narrowed it to Toronto, because of the rabid fans of a non-existant team, Chicago due to geographics and LA (yes I am eating my words but bear with me) simply because I have lived in SoCal for the greater part of my adult life and San Diego doesn't have a team yet.
:o
so I am not chasing team as of yet, more like slouching vaguely in a general direction... thanks for the insight

As A Newcastle fan. a person who watches EPL matches during the EPL season and as a passionate soccer fan, I support (and recomend you support) Toronto FC. They are the best. they lead in ticket sales, have the best fan base and kick butt... and they haven't even played a regular season game yet. They are an MLS success story and make all the other teams in the league look bad. I could go on and on but i won't, Just listen to this poece of advice, Support Toronto FC! you'll be happy you did :D

You are an idiot.
All of those lies you have just told don't help anyone except Canadians sleep at night, because they feel they can maybe stack up to the US in something which is laughable. Socialist morons.

There's a strong chance I may support the Crew, as I might be spending the next 2-7 years of my life in Cincinnati.

Dude. I'm all for hearing your opinions, but you seriously need to watch yourself and avoid going over the top, as you are wont to do. What the hell does suggesting Canadian insecurity have anything to do with choosing an MLS team?

Just to play the devil's advocate:
If someone were insecure in his Canadian-ness, he might try to embellish the facts about his favorite Canadian team in order to recruit more fans so that he would feel better about himself for supporting said Canadian team.

Maybe so, but remember the Southgate quote? There are some things that you just don't say even if you think it.

The Revs. We can outdrink any other fans in the league (although props to Dallas, they come close).
Plus, no matter how good things look, you'll always end up disppointed, so you'll feel right at home. Nothing like another disapointing Revs season to look forward to after another disappointing Newcastle season.
