I just finished reading about the "afters" on the Crew board. It sounds like the TFC supporters caused a lot of problems, torn up seats, pyro, smoke bombs, fights and general mayhem. I'm starting to hate that group of wannabes.
Much ado... I walked in and walked out, seeing a lot of red and didn't even get taunted at all. And I'm not a very forebearing guy. Really my wife was more verbal (to me) about the Canadians than they were to us.
When you go and square up against Canadians who took the 6+ hour bus ride down with multiple kegs on the bus (assumed), plus the 2 hours of boozing during the game, I think you're trying to get peppersprayed. Standing around to have a "chant off", really? We tied. They lucked out on an OG, it sucked. Next game is Thursday. Go Home.
All in all, the throwing stuff on/at the field (cups, newspapers, beer, handrails) is out of order in my book. But boozed up supporters aren't on the same page. And it wasn't just the TFC fans throwing stuff on the field.

Hey all, if any of your are going to be up late and bored on Saturday night, or I guess just bored for those not in England, you can log on to http://www.USLLive.com and check out my beloved Cleveland City in their road opener against Miami FC. I'll be downing pints at a local pub while watching and it'd be nice to have some spirited support from abroad as well. The game kicks off at 8pm EDT.
Also, be warned, USLLive was just upgraded and there have been some glitches reported. It's a free service though, so I'm not complaining. Some of the known problems are that the fullscreen button doesn't work for Mac users or for people using certain browsers other than IE, I know it doesn't work in Firefox. And, if you can't catch the game live then you can watch it later as all matches are archived. It's actually a huge improvement on last years site.
As for the talent level, I'd put the USL1 somewhere around League Two on average. Some players/teams better than that, some worse.

Thanks for the link. I might check the game out. I have to say though that I believe your opinion of the standard of the USL First Division is very harsh indeed. Every USL First Division side would likely defeat all of our League 2 sides, and the player quality of such USL sides is certainly better. I would say that overall the USL First Division would easily be of the standard of somewhere between the bottom half of the Championship and top half of League 1.

Hmmm... that may be. I haven't seen many League 1 or 2 matches. But I've seen a bit of the Championship and I know the USL falls below that. Heck, MLS is around the middle of the Championship, maybe a bit lower. And despite what a lot of USL fans try to decieve themselves with, MLS is the better league.

Yes the MLS is better than USL, however it would be quite a surprise if any MLS team did not finnish in the top half of the English Championship, should of course they be in it. Each MLS team has enough player quality and plenty of International players to compete with the top Championship sides, and every MLS would be very capable of winning promotion to the EPL.

Players 1-11 would complete in the Championship just fine but imo players 12-24 would struggle greatly when asked to fill in for injured starters.

Are there any future plans for a SSS for the Sounders, or is Qwest Field a permanent venue?

Ahhh long story indeed, that. In a word, no. The reasons are many and varied and stretch back to the Doug Logan days, when the then- MLS commissioner "promised" Seattle a side (still debated to this day) and Seattle went on to use that as part of the method for getting approval to build Quest Field. MLS under Don Garber has stressed smaller stadiums (and, once upon a time, natural grass) but the nature of "extingency" being what it is, Seattle now plays in a huge cavern of a stadium and 3 of the last 5 expansion sides will play on plastic (Toronto, Seattle, Vancouver).
Vancouver at least has plans for a soccer specific stadium to replace BC Place, though they're not close to getting it built, and I've heard rumors of a natural grass field in Toronto eventually.

Are there any future plans for a SSS for the Sounders, or is Qwest Field a permanent venue? No, at least not while Paul Allen is partner in the club. There is some talk of replacing the field turf with grass but nothing concrete on that yet. There is also a lot of grumbling around town about opening up the upper bowl since it's quite hard to get a ticket. Again nothing indicating any change this season in the seating configuration.

I am probably really late with this news, but I just found out that a guy I know has signed with Cleveland City. Eric Carpenter and I both went to Bethel College, but he was a few years behind me.
Has he played yet? Will he do well in USL?

Former Newcastle assistant John Carver resigned as Toronto boss. Web rumors are already linking him with a job back at Newcastle, of course.

At 12:20 today, Jeremy St. Louis tweeted "Toronto source tells me he is NOT headed to Newcastle." HoosierToon told me me that after the Fire game, the MLS postgame people said he was coming.
If this is true, Shearer is starting to remind me of myself when I take over a new club in Football Manager. I always try to hire lots of good coaches who have a connection with the club.

He came in last night to play the last 13 minutes of our 3-0 loss. That's been his first appearance. I didn't really notice him. But we were down a man and pretty horrid last night. Also, I, and about 20 others, were watching it on an internet feed on a laptop in a pub, so it was kind of hard to make out who was who with the quality of the feed and the size of the screen. I'll keep an eye out for you though and let you know about Friday's home opener if he plays.
Heck, it'll be easier, and much higher quality if you guys want to watch that game because it will be on FSC in the states.

Just bumping to let you know about our home opener, can't wait. We'll be on FSC so maybe you'll get to see my fat ass singing and screaming in the Green Army. I'm not going to point out which one I am, though. :D
I'm not sure if you guys get FSC over there? But I'm sure there are streams and there's also USLLive.com.
Be heading out for the tailgate after work and then on to the game. Kickoff in around 8 hours.
For once I'll be cheering against the side in black and white stripes.

If we don't beat KC at home this weekend. No.

KC are pretty decent this year..to be fair. But the Crew need to start stepping up. I thought you played really well the other day and were unlucky to draw, but those things happen.
Now will RBNY have the worst season ever?

Hey it's a long season so there's plenty of time left to make a run.
Ignore my team affiliations for a minute... :) I came back over here FWIW because I've been accepted and am going to Newcastle Uni in the fall for Business and wanted to thank you guys for your input on the city and the university (page 44 or so). It's appreciated and I'll be living in the shadow of St. James Park so for the fans outside Newcastle, it's ok to be jealous. :D I'm going to take the advice and get a phrasebook so there hopefully won't be a communication gap between my Boston accent and the Geordie accent!
But seriously, I'm REALLY psyched to be going to Newcastle in September and have been hoping your boys don't get sent down next season. So cheers and best wishes.
