- The Riot Squad is a fairly solid "hardcore fan" section, by MLS standards. I was disappointed, though, that I was sitting pretty close to them (upper concourse but right behind them) and whoever was operating the PA system during pregame and halftime seemed to just be turning it louder and louder to drown the RS out. Way lame on HDC's part.
Still a Dynamo fan, for the record.
The Riot Squad is weak. All talk and nothing to back it up with. No shock thatthe Chivas fans always attack them first and the Riot Squad always exercise "restraint."

I'm less concerned with the hooligan element and emphasizing the actual singing/paying attention to the game/etc. They're quite good in that department. But if you want to slate your own fans, who am I to intervene? :D

Ay, but most of the singing is in a rather instigatory manner and when they were called on it they simply backed down. I'm more of a backup what you say type person.

Santino Quaranta "I should be have been dead." (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/13/AR2008061303416.html?sid=ST2008061303417)
http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2008/06/13/PH2008061303948.jpg
On and off for five years, mostly unbeknown to team officials and teammates, Quaranta grappled with pain -- both emotional and physical. He dulled it by taking drugs, lots of them. Between practices and games, on road trips and U.S. national team duty, his days and nights were spent visiting dealers, partying late into the night, behaving erratically and watching his once-promising career crash.

So, the Chivas/Gals game wasn't so bad. But after watching European soccer for nine months abroad, it was very easy to spot the differences.
Both teams' players seemed like they were running out of control, like chickens with their heads cut off. It's like they were playing in panic. They need to slow the game down. Also, the collective first touches weren't so great. Also, a lot of intercepted passes.
I didn't enjoy the Gals' gameplay strategy, which was:
1) Have Beckham hoof the ball upfield whenever possible
2) Repeat
Boooooooooring.
Ante Razov is the man. So is Preki, who got kicked out for no apparent reason.
Anyway, criticisms aside, I still enjoyed watching. Looking forward to the KC/Crew game next Thursday on ESPN2.
We all cheer for a yellow soccer team, yellow soccer team, yellow soccer team...

Preki is indeed the man. I remember watching him play for the Tacoma Stars in the late 80s. I attended one of his (er, the Stars') soccer camps when I was like 7.

I recently wikipediaed him and discovered why he just goes by "Preki."

That Crew/Wizards match last night was a real blast to watch.
I've watched quite a few matches more than last year and the league is really putting on a good show so far.
Some of the matches can be real slopfests with no kind of continuity or flow but teams like Chivas USA, New England, Columbus and D.C really move the ball around like it's supposed to be.

I agree, it was fun.
Jimmy Conrad pulled jerseys like they were going out of style though...
And that Harrington kid is a douche.

Yeah, Conrad tends to walk a fine line out there, I remember Clint Dempsey jumping up in his face, back in the day, about an attempted slide tackle.
And that Harrington kid needs to get his a$$ beat; hell, if I had hair like that I'd have to beat my own a$$.

Saw a few ex-toon players tonight in Columbus as the Crew took on West Ham in a friendly before next weeks All Star game. Not sure if Bellamy is the fastest man I've seen with my eyes, or if the Crews reserve team defense (including Ezra) have concrete boots. West Ham won 3-1, while starting Ferdinand, Parker, Bellamy, Neill, Ashton, and Green (those are all I recognized). Apparently their second friendly match of training camp. The Crew started just two players who get regular time in the senior squad. West Ham looked like an EPL squad getting to know each other. Scotty Parker controlled the defensive Midfield for the Hammers pretty good. Dyer didn't travel.
The 500 or so Hammers fans that were there had a pretty good time. I know there were a few English there because of the accent, but I'd assume most were US supporters (the 10 around us were definitly American).
On a side note, strange to watch the Open finish today with folks wearing parkas, and then go out to a match where it was 90 degrees. Bet the Hammers wish they were playing at home.

Sounds like a bunch of American wannabe hooligans tried to silence the Crew supporter section. Great way to get more American's involved in soccer.

Yeah, halftime got a little rough when 10 or so WH fans ended up in the Nordecke and started a beer shower. The supporters are saying it was mostly American Hammer fans, I dunno though, I sit a few sections down from the corner. (I like my midfield seats).
Not really sure why they were getting so worked up about beating a team that was about league one level, if that. I think some MLS sides might do alright not getting relegated from the Coke League, but our reserves that they beat tonight couldnt beat St Mary's Episcopal.
Toronto Thursday should be interesting....call the Mounties.
