Firstly, I will only put players that I have seen enough of so you wont see guys like Di Stefano, Puskas, Eusebio or Mathews.
I left out some of my all time fav`s for the sake of the teams balance.
Also, my subs would be never ending so I only put one sub, a golden sub if you like.
I didnt want a team full of attackers with no dig so here is my perfect team in the solid 4-4-2 formation.....
GK - Dino Zoff (Best ever Italian keeper)
LB - Paulo Maldini (Most complete left back in history)
CB - Franco Baresi (Best sweeper since Beckenbauer)
CB - Jurgen Kohler (Superb man marker, reliable & solid)
RB - Danny McGrain (Best ever Scottish defender)
LW - George Best (Greatest ever British player)
CM - Johan Cruyff (Complete player, my playmaker supreme)
CM - Franz Beckenbauer (c) (Too skillfull for defence, my rock in midfield)
RW - Garrincha (Greatest dribbler & winger, great scorer too)
FWD - Pele (Mr complete, best Brazilian, no need to say more)
FWD - Van Basten (Most complete striker ever, absolute magician)
.......................................Zoff......................................
McGrain..............Baresi.................Kohler................Maldini
Garrincha........Beckenbauer.............Cruyff..................Best
.........................Pele................Van Basten.....................
Golden sub - Zinedine Zidane.
Here is my team formed to beat yours :)
------------------ Schmicle -----------------
Cafu ---------- Nesta ---------- Rio Ferdinan ------- Zanetti
Figo ----------- Rijkaard ------ Gullit ----------- Giggs
---------------- Ronaldo9 ---- Maradona (C) -----------------
Sub: Matheus, Redondo, R. Calos, Zico (sad to put him here), M. Laudrup, Batistuta

How do you figure your team beats mine when mines is likely better in every single position man for man.
Zoff v Scmeichel - 2 of the best ever, nobody would have an advantage of note there tho my preference would be Zoff.
McGrain v Cafu - Both could attack great but McGrain was more solid defensively (please dont say he isnt if you havent seen him play)
Baresi & Kohler v Nesta & Ferdinand - This is your best chance to beat me but I think mines are a better partnership as Baresi is the reader who is solid & Kohler is the rock who can also read well, there were better PLAYING defenders than Kohler but few if any as reliable & solid. Franco was arguably the best ever CB.
Maldini v Zanetti - same as our right backs, Maldini was far superior defensively, this is a mis-match.
Garrincha v Figo - Another easy decision, Garrincha was a better dribbler, set up more goals & scored more. much better player & much much better winger.
Beckenbauer v Rijkaard - Both solid, Franz had better skills, better passing & better positional awareness, just plain better.
Cruyff v Gullit - Again both wonderfull playmakers but Johan will score more & his all round play is just a level above Ruud`s for me, ask Ruud himself who wins this one.
Best v Giggs - Both excellent wingers but Best has more versatility + would score way more & could even tackle very well. Best wins this by a good margin.
Pele v Maradona - The Brazilian was more complete, would score more goals & even assist more goals. As strikers, there is only one winner. Diego`s best position was attacking midfield IMO.
Van Basten v Ronaldo - Marco was a better finisher with both feet, better with the head, better at assists, better crosser of the ball & overall just a better player, this isnt that close for me, MVB was the perfect striker & Ronaldo had too many flaws despite doing what he did very well, this is an ALL TIME team were talking about here, lets not get crazy.
Cheers.

No Maradona, Didi or Platini at all? Also, why would Kohler get the nod over Forster, Campbell, or Desailly who could compliment Baresi better? Mcgrain over Breitner or Vogts? Van Basten over Romario?
It's a good XI, but these were the just first questions that came into my mind.
OK... let me try explain...
1stly, Kohler is the ONLY player in my team I wasnt 100% on, one of the main reasons I put him with Baresi is because they are different types & I believe Kohler is the type of defender that would thrive playing centre back with Baresi aswell as bring out Baresi`s best also & lets not forget... Kohler WAS DEFINETLY one of the best defenders of the 90s, I admired him on his own no matter who he played with.
Next... McGrain is the most underrated defender I have ever seen, he could attack & defend superbly but Id be looking mainly at his defensive qualities in this team since I dont have 2 holding midfielders (another reason Maldini is on the left, his defensive greatness.)
Now... I havent seen enough of Didi but as for Maradona & platini, they are both at their best as an attacking midfielder or playmaker but Johan Cruyff is my man for that position & I think he`s better than both Diego & Michele.
Lastly... I loved Romario as both a player & striker but Marco van Basten was better on both counts, MVB had more magic & was a better all round player, better with assists & creating out of nothing also. MVB was the best striker in history IMO.
Cheers.

Fair enough, I think someone like Campbell and Desailly would complement Baresi better, but each to their own. I don't know next to anything about McGrain so I can't say anything there?
Now... I havent seen enough of Didi but as for Maradona & platini, they are both at their best as an attacking midfielder or playmaker but Johan Cruyff is my man for that position & I think he`s better than both Diego & Michele.
Just wondering, how have you seen Garrincha and Pele, but not Didi? Also, where would you say Cruyff trumps Maradona and Platini?
Lastly... I loved Romario as both a player & striker but Marco van Basten was better on both counts, MVB had more magic & was a better all round player, better with assists & creating out of nothing also. MVB was the best striker in history IMO.
That's a pretty big claim to make.
If not for his suspect NT career (only 5 goals in competetive games), I could see where you're coming from. MVB is the complete #9, but I don't see how you could argue he's better than Eusebio, Puskas, Muller and Romario? These players frequently destroyed defences at every level they played at.

That's nice and all but why is Zidane your golden sub instead of Maradona or Platini?

Cheers.Bill,
You have an almost perfect team there, although mine would be totally different :D (see below).
You have a solid defense, with a typically central defender though (McGrain) out of his original position, somewhat awkwardly assuming the role of a right defender.
In my opinion, you’d need to make up your mind between him and Kohler (or him am Baresi), to dispense with one of them – and put a real right defender in that defense (I’d suggest Carlos Alberto).
A great defense-oriented midfield with Beckenbauer and Cruyjff.
Best/Pelé as pure 10’s (offensive midfielders), and Garrincha/Van Basten (pure forwards), respectively assuming the left and right sides of the attack does look perfect.
IMO…just ‘looks’ though.
The problem is precisely with those last 2 guys up in front: both monopolized too much the right half of the field (one as a wing, the other as a striker). In my opinion, they would end up literally…colliding.
Specially if you are to have Carlos Alberto ‘occasionally’ frequenting that corner of the field.
Not that Van Basten doesn’t deserve to be in there, but he’s a forward who priviledged too much that right side of the field and there would certainly have not much room between Garrincha, Pelé, Best & him.
Purer box-oriented forwards like Puskas, Müller or Romário might fit better in there (I’d go for Puskas).
___________________________________________________________________________________
BTW, my 3 ‘ultimate super teams’ (in order of preference):
Yashin
C. Alberto – Beckenbauer – B. Moore – N. Santos
Didi – Di Stéfano
Garrincha - Pelé – Puskas - Maradona
Yashin
C. Alberto - Beckenbauer - Nilton Santos
Didi – Di Stéfano - Cruyjff
Garrincha – Pelé - Puskas – Best
Banks
Domingos da Guia - Bobby Moore
Gérson – B. Charlton - Zizinho
S. Matthews - Zico – Leônidas da Silva - Eusébio – Best

So he really likes Zidane. That doesn't explain why he chose him ahead of Maradona and Platini as a sub. Unless he happens to think Zidane is better than them.

Do you really want this to descend into another Zidane vs <insert name> arguement?

How do you figure your team beats mine when mines is likely better in every single position man for man.
Thanks for your comment. One on one your team may be slightly better but I believe that when playing as a team, my team is not inferior.
Zoff v Scmeichel - 2 of the best ever, nobody would have an advantage of note there tho my preference would be Zoff.
I think Schmeicel is a far superior modern keeper. He is more effective in counter attacking.
McGrain v Cafu - Both could attack great but McGrain was more solid defensively (please dont say he isnt if you havent seen him play)
yeah I haven't seen McGrain play yet but Cafu is so great and consistent to believe that someone in the past might be superior to him. I have no comment here.
Ok! I somewhat agree but I put Maradona in to beat Franco and this had been proven several times in Series A.
Maldini v Zanetti - same as our right backs, Maldini was far superior defensively, this is a mis-match.
Well... first I thought of R. Calos but I chose Zanetti because I like his playing style. One on one Maldini is better but I have no choice as I need a different player in my team. IMO Zanetti is good enough to replace Maldini.
Garrincha v Figo - Another easy decision, Garrincha was a better dribbler, set up more goals & scored more. much better player & much much better winger.
I don't consider goals & assist or any kind of stats when comparing players from different era but I use my sense :D. Garrincha was more dominant in his era but Figo is up there with him in terms of talents, skills and leadership.
Again I don't use any kind of stats but I think Rijkaard and Gullit have proved that they could play extremely well together. Another reason I choose them because they are much much more athletic which is advantegeous in the modern pressing football.
Best v Giggs - Both excellent wingers but Best has more versatility + would score way more & could even tackle very well. Best wins this by a good margin.
Again no stats counted. I choose Giggs for speed. When you have Maradona and Ronado in your team, a very fast and skillful player is needed and Giggs is my man.
Pele v Maradona - The Brazilian was more complete, would score more goals & even assist more goals. As strikers, there is only one winner. Diego`s best position was attacking midfield IMO.
My intention is to let him take a free role be it a striker or midfielder. No one is better than Diego when playing freestyle football not even the great Pele.
Cheers.
I totally disagree with the last comparison. Pre-injury Ronaldo was on the same level as Maradona and Pele. Even the Ronaldo after 1999 is still comparable to MVB and I still choose the former over the later.
Ok ... just my opinion.
Cheers,

We will likely never agree on the R9 MVB situation. I believe Van Basten to be on Pele & Maradona`s level & Ronaldo to be way below but as you say, its personal opinion.
The Zidane situation - The reason he was my golden sub rather than Diego or Platini is because I liked him better. I dont think there is a great deal between all 3 as I rate both in my top 10 ever so I went with my favourite of the 3 but as seen in my actual team, favouritism doesnt earn a place, I like balance & formations that I believe can work with the players I have.
OK... Maradona might have got the better of Baresi (& possibly even Kohler aswell before you mention it) but there were also times when he didnt (by the way, Kohler says MVB was his most difficult opponent, not Maradona) Also, dont you think MVB & Pele could torment Ferdinand & Nesta ?
As for other great strikers taking MVBs place, Muller, Klinsmann & Romario were all special players & favourites of mine but MVB was a level above.
Someone said that MVB was the perfect 9 but never did it at the highest level... well the only level where MVB failed to make an impression was the world cup (& it hurts him historically in the ratings although he still makes most top 10 lists despite retiring 6 or so yrs premature) & MVB only played 4 wc games in 1990 & the dutch were an utter disgrace failing to win a game.
You cant tell me that Van Basten never tore apart & punished better or equal teams in seria A & europe than what played in the 90 wc - it was only ONE MONTH of the mans career.
Van Basten would likely have become the `official` european player of the century if he played on until 35-36 adding at least another 1 or 2 euro player of year & world player of year awards not to mention being at his peak at 29 in world cup 94.
Van Basten & Pele are the best strikers ever & IMO would have formed the most lethal partnership ever. deadly & sublime are just 2 of the words that come to mind.
Cruyff & Franz B - the perfect midield engine room, smart elegant & punishing.
Best & Garrincha - Best dribblers, great assists & not short of wonder goals themselves.
You could argue that Best & Garrincha were slightly too greedy to fit into a perfect team but they were both top 10 players with magic in their boots & knew when to assist a team mate, maradona wasnt any less selfish than those 2 & if you have players who are slightly greedy on occassion then what better place to put them than outside where it is usually is required to run at players for the teams benefit.
Ps. You wont get a better organised midfield than Cruyff & Beckenbauer, 2 excellent team players with more than a touch of individual genius.
Sorry if Ive missed any points.
Cheers.

You will struggle to find anyone else to agree with your claims in regard to Ronaldo versus Van Basten. It also makes little sense to have a golden substitute who has serious problems with his end product and ability to influence a game. You need your golden substitue to be an impact player and Zidane is not. It is a complete waste.

I'm talking about spanking any 5 contemporary Premier Leagues or top clubs together in official competition, in London, with all 55 players stuck within the box  ...
The goal rate would be circa 5:1. Scores like 35 x 5, 10 x 2, 16 x 4 would be standard :p.By the way, these are good names (a mix of my world best XI and my Brazil best XI).Your team is certainly more balanced:

I'd use it against harder competitors than those Premier League 'toughies' :D ...Not even in Real Madrid´s best XI... (Hugo Sánchez) was a great striker, but far from the best of all-time...Are you sure you're not my alter ego?...
