That's too bad, and he's only 22 as well. I wonder if he's worked on his coaching badges, maybe he can come back to America and share what he learned during his years in Arsenal's Academy. That could be a silver lining to the dark cloud of his knee injuries.

this sucks. I played with Danny in club ball in Va. He had a lot of knee problems back then too. I wish him the best after soccer.

If anyone is interested....there's a thread on Danny in the Yanks Abroad forum that has more information on him. I, too, wish him the best of luck.

Best way to sum it up.
Good luck to him in wherever life takes him.

I'm glad mixmastermatt created this thread. I meant to do it last time I was on BigSoccer and then had my damn computer go down all weekend. Repped.

Sad to see it go like that for him. I remember when we used to have more than few non-gooner Americans come here looking for info on him and guessing when he'd be get first team time with Arsenal. Sorry way to have things work out after all that seemed possible for him early on. :(

Sorry to see this happen. I always half hoped that he would really hit it big and make it back to the Arsenal somehow. 22 is awfully young to have to give up on a dream, but at an age when most American players are just coming out of college, he has seen the top levels of the game.

Isn't he the first American to score for Arsenal? He'll always be in the record books for that!!

It is hard to see his career come to an end. Ive watched him since he was a kid playing for the Roanoke in his youth years. You always knew he was going to be something special, you just didnt know it would end this soon. For those who do know him as a person, know he has a lot more to often than just football.

thanks for the link. I havent seen or talked to him in years but he is a nice guy. I was hoping that after things didnt work out for him in England that when he came home he would latch on with my other favorite team D.C. United but obviously that wont be happening. I do hope he stays with the game and maybe can help out at our old club in Roanoke.

He did give a nice little shoutout to DC United on the arseblog podcast.

I'm pretty sure there's a sizable Iranian population in the DC area made up of those who fled the Iranian Revolution. Several years ago I went to an Iranian New Year's celebration in suburban Maryland and there must have been a thousand people there. I also remember that when Mohammad Khakpour played for the MetroStars a bunch of Iranian fans bought out an entire section of RFK to see him play.

edit: Iranian demographic info I found on the web.

Over half of all Iranian immigrants lived in the state of California in 2000.
While all 50 states received Iranian immigrants according to Census 2000, 55.9 percent (158,613) lived in California. The states with the next-largest Iranian immigrant populations were New York (17,323 or 6.1 percent), Texas (15,581 or 5.5 percent), Virginia (10,889 or 3.8 percent), and Maryland (9,733 or 3.4 percent).

The metropolitan areas with the most Iranian immigrants were Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and the Washington, DC-Baltimore metropolitan area.
In 2000, 41 percent (114,712) of the Iranian foreign born resided in Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County, 10 percent (27,112) in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, eight percent (21,971) in New York City, and seven percent (19,726) in the Washington, DC-Baltimore metropolitan area. The next three largest destinations were San Diego (7,675), Dallas (6,376), and Houston (6,287), respectively.

And to add a bit in regard to Iranian players.....as much as Ali Karimi's star has fallen the last year with his dismal showing at the world cup, a couple of players have emerged since then: Andranik Teymourian who plays the combative midfield role for Bolton (not quite a starter yet) and Javad Nekounam who scored the game winner yesterday for Osasuna in the UEFA cup.

Also as a DCU fan you may be interested to know that Alecko Eskandarian's dad, also named Andranik, was a defender for Iran at the 1978 World Cup and later played for the Cosmos for 5 seasons.

I play for the club in Roanoke that Danny played for and he came out and practiced with us back in the fall and even coached a few of our games. You could tell, unfortunately, that when he was training with us for his comeback that his knees were seriously damaged. This is sad news to hear, but I have heard that he might have an Arsenal job in his future. I was told yesterday that he was called by Arsene Wenger a few days ago and was offered a job as a North American scout. Maybe even the head NA scout. I haven't seen this confrimed anywhere yet, but this is coming from people who are good friends with Danny himself.
