Question:
Why is Jay DeMerit not a USMNT regular?
He is a fan favorite in England, and holds his own in the Premiership. It seems like he is overlooked and underrated.
Gooch, given starter and is real good, Bocanegra clearly regarded as top choice. DeMerit should be another player who should be as highly regarded as these two.

Am I the only one who is annoyed to the core by the the DeMerit conversation? Everyone talks about how good is is but he is playing for the worst prem team and I've watched him get burned a few times. he doesn't look good enough for international play. you know, like albright.

Jay's time will come soon enough. Patience.

When would you have suggested that he should have broken into the team?
When he started to garner attention for his play, he was an uncapped central defender playing in a 2nd division league behind 4 or 5 established internationals.
We have had two games since the world cup, and due to travel and time constraints, only a few euros came over.
There has been no chance for him to have been called up yet. Be patient.

he's not good enough... everyone that is ahead of him on the pecking order, is better that him

As I stated it is a question. I've seen him down the line in people's lists and have seen that he has scored some critical goals. Just wanted to see if there have been rumblings about him. he seems to have broken in in England without much of a push from established connections.

It'd be suitable for him to play during the Gold Cup or Copa America, whichever is regarded as the less important competition. I don't see a spot for him in our first team.

Who is ahead of him? That is kind of what I am asking.
Not trying to be sarcastic just interested.

In no particular order:
1. Gooch
2. Cherundolo
3. Bocanegra
4. Conrad
5. Spector
Then you probably have DeMerit and Bornstein tied for 6th. I definitely think he should get a shot this summer in one of the tournaments, but I just don't see him starting in 2010. As someone mentioned above, he's a decent defender but he does get burned a lot.

For the same reason Matthew Upson isn't a regular for England.

DeMerit is a player who has no pedigree in terms of youth national team experience or being a dominant college player; so he's going to be held to a higher standard. This is his first season in Barclay's; so one would expect him to get a look in the summer.
I've never seen him play but know that he plays on the worst team in the league and that it can be difficult to assess a player in those circumstances; so maybe he is among our best defenders. Why do you think he should be as highly regarded as Onyewu or Bocanegra?

DeMerit still has some work to do before he is considered first XI material.
After the number of times he's proven people wrong though, I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it in there. (of course I have never been overly impressed with his pace and that's not something you can really improve on, you either got it or you don't)

His pace hasn't gotten him in trouble this year, though. Even with Henry, his problems were more along the lines of getting spun around than outrun (and that was henry at his very best, to be fair).
Not sure if he's ever going to be a top choice cb for the US, but can't see why he wouldn't be an option. He has a lot of fight in him. No doubting that.

I have only seen about 5-6 Watford matches. I didn't mean to imply that he is slow, but he doesn't have "make up" speed. It's not a good deficiency to have as a defender. He has looked good to me not spectacular though. He is a bit more offensively minded than many of our backs it seems.
I wouldn't say he's not an option, I just don't see him as a first XI option just yet. I am sure he'll get a look in one of the summer comps we are in though.
You are right though, making a list of players who haven't been made to look silly by Henry would be shorter than listing those who have. He is a freak of nature. :)
I am sure Jay will fight like he always has but he has a tough road ahead.

Pros: Has a nose for the goal, good work rate, a guy who does more with determination than talent.
Cons: Too small and gets beat by bigger, international class striker, but also not quick enough to handle world class fast strikers.
Basically, I would play him when Dolo is not in the line up and Boca is sitting because of Yellow Card accumulation. Would be interesting to see him paired up with Gooch.

If you listened to World Soccer Daily they'd tell you that DeMerit was our first choice left back and that its a travesty that he's yet to play for the nats discounting that hes a CB, a short one at that for the international game, never played left back, and not even mentioning that the position he plays is probably the one with the most depth for the US.
