The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of six association football (soccer) confederations under the auspices of FIFA, the international governing body of the sport. The OFC is the only confederation without an automatic qualification to the World Cup Finals. Currently the winner of the OFC must play-off against an Asian confederation side.

Oceania has only been represented at three World Cup Finals - Australia in 1974, New Zealand in 1982 and Australia in 2006. However, Australia is now no longer a member of the Oceania Football Confederation, having joined the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.

Australia being a continent is taught in USA & maybe Canadian schools only.

So, FIFA now determines world geography? :rolleyes: I can't tell you how impressive that is. Here's hoping FIFA's not your authority on ethics as well :eek:

Asia - Nakata, skillfull player and the first Japanese player I recall making any sort of impact in Europe.


Yasuhiko Okudera - played for Koln and Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga in the late 70s-early 80s. Was, I believe, the first Japanese player to play in a top Euro league.

Kewell plays for the Australian National team, which has been a part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) since 1 January 2006. Nowhere should he be regarded as representing FIFA's Oceania Confederation (OFC), from that date. :p
