Here's the match thread for the match between impalemeplz vs my team.

Tactics:

This team will be sitting back and defending for this away tie. Chances to score will come on the counter-attack. Even if we do go 1-0 up, we won’t be defending at all costs for the rest of the match. If we get more chances to hit on the counter, we will. Nesta is captaining the side and he will help to structure the defence. Neill will not be able to go forward as he pleases. This time, he has to commit himself to defending but he can go forward to take penalties. When defending corners, everybody who comes back must mark a man in the box. Zigic must be marked tightly as he is a huge threat in the air or players could play off him. Milosevic and Camoranesi will stay forward during a corner and Deco will stay just outside of the box. Grella can move into the defence whenever necessary and he will need to when Grosso moves forward. Deco will be the playmaker and he will take the direct free-kicks. Grosso will take the indirect free-kicks and stay at the far post when my team gets corner. Camoranesi will be the only winger starting the match. Grosso runs so far forward so there isn’t much of a need to used Simao yet. Simplicio will even join the attack and he will take the corners. Morientes is used to a slower style of play so I’m using Milosevic as an out-and-out striker. He is very tall and his height will be handy in the air. In this match, we can't waste time building-up around the box. We are better off shooting from a tight angle than slowing down play and building up.

For this match, Morientes will be used as a sub if we go 1-0 down. Mascherano would be taken off. Milosevic would go for the crosses and if Savo can't score, Morientes would be there to do what he does best. Once Morientes is on, Milosevic would have to hold up the ball when possible. The midfielders would get the ball from Milosevic, dribble, take a shot or try to set up Morientes.

Del Piero would be could with shots at tight angles but I don't have any clear intentions to play him. If ADP does come on, he would come on for Camoranesi and he would play behind Milosevic (assuming that I don't play Morientes). If it was Simao coming on instead of ADP, he would be playing closer to Milosevic closer to what Camo would do.

first half. try and establish a hi tempo game with tight marking across midfield and a hi line across the back 4 with woodgate marshalling the defense. when the opponent's defense falls back to the 18 yard line i will play a more direct game to bypass his packed midfield and make use of kanoutes flickons and knockdowns to milito and runners.

2nd half ......

corners and freekicks will be a main part of my gameplan. woodgate, yobo, kanoute, gilberto all being very dangerous in the box off corners and indirect freekicks.
on corners milito will stand in front of the keeper. gilberto will attack far post with yobo attacking near post. woodgate and kanoute will freelance. cesc and d'alessandro will alternate corners.

queudrue(left footed) is my direct free kick taker. kanoute, nene and milito my penalty kick takers.

centrebacks
keep tight to milosevic and play him hard. woodgate will make sure the defense is alert and keeping a high line when we are attacking.

fullbacks
yobo to make forward runs to assist and push simplicio wide.
queudrue to hold back and mark camonerasi in a normal fashion and use his left foot to launch direct balls to kanoute when the opponents defense is sitting back

midfield
i chose to play d'alessandro over giuly as he is better at picking out passes to unlock a defensive side. will largely be a playmaker and come back to help with grosso's runs. will keep tight to deco when gilberto goes forward for corners.

NENE will use his quickness and link play to stretch the defense on the left. ordered to shoot on site if defenders backoff or when cutting in from his side.

cesc will look to make runs to keep mascherano and grella busy. defensive duties will include assisting gilberto(see below) with deco or pressuring the ball if caught up field. will keep tight to deco when gilberto goes forward for corners.

gilberto's roll will be largely determined when we dont have the ball. his main duty will be to shutdown deco and stay very tight to him. play short passes to d'alesandro and cesc.

forwards

kanoute as outlined in the gameplan will be a target man. his defensive duties will include putting pressure on grella who can be caught in possession(denmark game-tomasson and jorgensen stole the ball off him multiple times).

diego milito will be the poacher and look to feast off knockdowns and balls in behind the defense. he will play on the shoulder of the last defender.

didnt know you had to do the 2nd half and subs in the first post as the home team.

2nd half: instruct cesc at half time to assist more on deco if we are up by a slim margin. if tied keep tactics the same as first half.
if we go up by a large margin(2-0 or 4-1) before the 75th minute mark play a possession game with short passes. counter on the flanks with giuly and nene if chance is there.

dor02 is allowed to make an adjustment post since impalemeplz could have read dor)2's game plan before posting his. The 2nd leg will reverse the order.

After dor02 made his adjustment, the 1st leg is finished. Then, the rest of us can award a scoreline. I reserved the right to throw away weird scoreline such as 5-0, 6-0, 7-0, etc.

Some adjustments:

Nene must not be allowed to shoot on site. He can't be allowed to cut in. Thuram must be aware of his presence.

Grella can't just hold up the ball as he pleases. He has to launch long balls to Grosso or Camo or play a one-two with either of his midfielders, preferably Mascherano. Don't focus too much on passing to Deco. He may be the main playmaker but Simplicio loves to make those runs into the attack so we must benefit from his pace and runs. Grella and Mascherano must be aware of Cesc's runs as he may love to join the attack or even play a one-two with Gilberto. Simplicio has to be aware of D'Alessandro.

If Yobo is given too much space to run on the wing, Simplicio shouldn't focus too much on charging him down. It's better that the rest of the defence and the other DMs to pack the penalty box.

Kanoute must be carefully watched and marked tightly at corners. Neill would be the main tagger. If a long-ball is hit to Kanoute, another player must mark Milito. Out of the players who are in the penalty box when defending a corner, only Nesta can do what he wants to do. If he wants to mark Kanoute also, pick up another man or just read the play and header the ball out, he can do that.

If Camo is struggling on the right-wing, he must move closer to the middle. He made a fast, solo run down the middle in the Italy - Ukraine World Cup quarter-final and nearly scored. This time, he needs to persist on those runs, especially if Morientes comes on. Camo and Milosevic must do what they can to provoke Woodgate into scoring an own goal.

Defenders can only walk away from their man once the ball is cleared. The clearances have to be long ones. If the ball has been cleared away 20-25 yards away from goal, the opposition must be forced into building play again. Players like Woodgate, Milito and co must not be able to pounce on a loose ball.

See, rather than labeling it dull. I'd say this is tight tactical play with few scoring opportunities.

For me , Doro was too defensive for having such a good opportunity to boss the midfield here. I don't think he could get enough guys forward to trouble Impalemeplz' defense.

On the other side, Doro will have a solid defense and midfield and Kanoute/Milito's chances will be limited by the experience and physical strength of Doro's back-line.

However, Impalemeplz seemed to touch on his main strength which could be set-pieces and I see that being a key here.

On a set piece with minutes to go! The training of your set pieces paid off but would try to be more aggressive during home games, for it almost cost you, especially since the header was scored by Carragher, a defender. Curiose to see how you will return as the away team. Good luck to both of you!

Doro2's offense is too weak. I did not think he can score by playing a single striker. Woodgate and Carragher could easily take Milosevic out. Did I make a mistake? Doro2 is at home, right?

One thing is for sure. Impa's defense is a strong point, especially with Gilberto sitting onfront of the back 4. Not many wide attacking options. I think that Cesc and D'allesandro will carve out enough chances. 2-1.

Dor02's team is solid defensively, but I dont think with the comination of players that are on the pitch dont offer much going forward. Deco is one piece, but he's going to have to carry the team. Camouranesi provides an outlet, but Impa's defense will be too strong.

1st half;
play keep ball with cesc, d'alessandro, nene and gilberto to take the crowd out of it, essentially draw the sting. kanoute will play as a target man and hold up the ball and dig the side out of trouble. send carragher, woodgate, yobo, gilberto and kanoute into the box on corners and indirect freekicks.(queudrue and cesc/d'alessandro will cover deep. nene in front of them about 15-20 yards to help stop deco breaking out)


2nd half;
sub poulsen in at 50 minutes for NENE and switch to a counter style using giuly's breakaway ability to get behind grosso.


tactics:

woodgate will mark morientes out of the game. carragher to clear anything that drops behind.

sidebacks;
yobo to play tight to simao and use his physicality and athletiscm.
queudrue to play tight to camoranesi and use his experience to subdue the right mid. backup NENE.

gilberto will once again be assigned to deco.
cesc will look for short passes to keep possession and look to play in giuly when on the counter.
d'alessandro starts over poulsen/baptista cause he has more technical ability to play keep ball in the 1st half plan. will link with NENE and queudrue with short passes. he will be key in this triangle.
NENE will drop deeper to find space in the 1st half and make late runs into the box in the 2nd half.
giuly will provide an outlet in the first half and look to link with cesc to keep possession. 2nd half he will make more off the ball runs to push back grosso.

forwards;
kanoute to drop deep and hold the ball up in the 1st half. 2nd half stay more up top and use quick layoffs to cesc and nene.

subs;
diego milito will come on for kanoute, on the 65th minute, for more added threat on the counter.
poulsen will come on 50th minute for nene to give cesc more license.
