Our lack of clean sheets is really hurting.

It's true that we don't have that many clean sheets, but we've only conceded four more goals than ManU and three more goals than Liverpool and Chelsea. I think the biggest problem we have is not taking advantage of opportunities. The game against Chelsea aside, Arsenal have dominated most of their 1-1 draws. If the finishing was better then we could have won another three or four games by now.

The annoying thing to me is that if we ever fixed our corner defense we'd likely have the lowest goals against in the Prem. Even a decent corner defense and we'd be in decent good shape.

The main problem this season though has been allowing the other side to score first. We've gone behind first in nearly 60% of our games. Compare that to just 19% for Chelski and 22% for ManU. True we have the second best points per game return when the opponent scores first but if that percent was even 40% we'd be in the title hunt this season. Look at the number of points we've lost when winning...2pt (again only 2nd to ManU's 0pt) so we'd be in great shape if it wasn't for the silly first goal against.

Wait – Man U has lost points when winning – they were winning against us, then lost, so they've dropped at least 2 points as well.

oops...I meant to write ManCity. ManU has dropped 7pt when winning.

This can not be right. I can think of 3 points United lost when winning.... to the Arsenal;)

While I agree with points about defending corners and such, I feel that the real issue is getting up or energy/finishing in the first 20 mins. Vs. Wigan, for example, we could have gone ahead sooooo easily, but we had so many missed opportunites. Same to put Bolton away sooner in the FA game. And once we go ahead by one (Bolton excepted) and certainly by two, who will come back against us? In so many matches we've been slow to open, and then the issue of that opponent's first goal sets in...

Fact is ManU are having their best premiership season ever, FAR better than their treble season. We averaged 2.3 points per match going unbeaten in 03-04. ManU are averaging 2.4 right now.

Prior to 03, 90 points was a guarentee for the title. Now 90 is the minimum to be in the battle come May 1.

I can't remember too many seasons where I have enjoyed watching us as much as this year. Granted, I'll likely have a heart condition after this season is done but it is very enjoyable.

I know this isn't quantifiable but compared to recent seasons, I'd have to go back to the Invincibles to remember a time where I was as confident, game in and game out, that no matter what happened, at the end of 90, we'd be on top.

what is that catagory worth with Citeh leading. :eek:Well in isolation the stat means nothing. However if you combine it with the others I mentioned, I think it suggests that should we stop falling behind so often (say 35-45% instead of nearly 60%) we'd be more than capable of holding on to our leads and thus could expect to have be in the Prem title hunt. ManCity lead the stat since they are rarely in a winning position to lose points from due to their low goal scoring (see their poor 5w5d record when getting a clean sheet) but they do have a decent ability to hold onto that slight lead (as we learned earlier this season) especially at home. That is a different pattern from Arsenal. We're second because once we go ahead we rarely drop points and have plenty of goal scoring (although a bit more goals scored away would help) to lock down wins should the pattern of letting the other side score first change.

If you compare our record to ManU you'll see that the other big stat difference (other than letting the opposition score first) is their record when letting in a goal or more. They are 9w3D3L when not getting a clean sheet while we're only 5W7D5L when not getting a clean sheet. Arsenal and ManU are both perfect when keeping a clean sheet but they have 3 more than us (we have a game in hand). I'd argue that we have so many more draws and fewer wins when we don't have a clean sheet because of when the goal is scored which leads back to letting the other team score first. Fix that issue by the start of next season and we'll be well on the way to fighting for a league title.

Several reasons why we could have been doing better this season.

1. New Stadium = Slow starts = conceding first = chasing a game against 11 men behind the ball = lost points. Reason why Man Utd have done well this season is because they generally score first enabling the opposing team to come forward more, take risks ending up with Man Utd scoring a few more. This is what we have been lacking this season.

2. Injuries. Almost every player has been injured in our squad this season and a high number have been long term e.g. Gallas, Henry, Van Persie, Eboue, Diaby, Ljungberg, Hleb. It's been shown that the team with the least number of injuries amongst the top 4 usually wins the title.

3. Incorrect decisions. We could have won a lot of games where a player shouldn't have got sent off, penalty should have been given, incorrect offsides.

so in a nutshell... just a normal season has happend to us...

I will give you the 1st stat, but everything else pretty much happens to every other team...

we are only to blame for being in 4th place... but I have this strong feeling we are gonna hit the ground running next season, and not look back

Related question...

I've been wondering if there's a website which shows league tables mid-season. So you could compare up to week 31 in prior years vs. this year, for example.

The only league tables website I've used is http://www.the-english-football-archive.com/football_league.htm, but it only shows final season end standings.

Reason 2 is the most important one IMO.

If u look at Man U , they havent had ONE injury all season. and theyve played the same XI each & every game. it really is luck for them, becuz NO one has gone down injured, except saha for a short short while, but then they had larson to "cover" lol him.

Not perfect since they are connected to Arsenal fixtures (thus you have to look up the other team's fixtures if you want to do stuff like track point gaps on a certain date other than an Arsenal fixture date) but still a handy resource.

Thanks Cannon. I guess it's really FootyMad's database huh? Anyway it'll probably do for the comparisons I've been wondering about.
