I'm starting this thread so we can discuss who we think should be in the Selección Argentina for the Venezuela 2007 Copa America. I really think Basile should use this tourney to try new people, or people who still need to prove themselves. What I'm trying to say is I don't wanna see Crespo, Zanetti or any of the "older" guys, they are proven and we should focus on trying to improve the new players today, so tomorrow we have a kick ass NT.

22 players go to La Copa, and in peru 2004 we took 2 goalies, 8 defenders, 8 mids and 4 forwards. (We had some versatile defenders who could also play in mid)

To avoid problems, lets just say we will take the same number of players for each position, who should they be?

Goalies:

1.-Ustari
2.-Carrizo

Defenders:

3.-Garay
4.-Gonzalo Rodriguez
5.-Gioda
6.-Zabaleta
7.-
8.-
9.-
10.-

Midfielders:

11.-Gago
12.-Belluschi
13.-Messi
14.-*Mascherano, but he has enough NT experience
15.-D'alessandro
16.-Neri Cardozo
17.-
18.-

Forwards:

19.-Aguero
20.-Palacio
21.-Pavone
22.-D. Milito/Higuain *Tevez, but he has enough NT experience

(Remember this is not official, and it's just for fun, so if you think a player is worthy don't be shy and post why you think he deserves a spot)

Or maybe you think we should take our best squad?

Milito, Burdisso, Heinze to the defense. Heinze has to be there.

Sosa and Maxi to the midfield.

I agree, I really like to see Sosa there. One player I am sure most people will overlook is Lucas Lobos (too bad he's in segunda in Spain). In form that guy is a great player, a true enganche, but unlike Riquelme he runs.
Another guy I would like to see but it is nearly impossible that he'll be selected would be Veron. That guy has character, experience, skill, leadership, he is the essence of huevos and he never gave up on the NT despite being entirely blamed for the 2002 fiasco where he played not at 100%. Funny how other players were forgiven but Veron will be forever remember for that WC. Too bad. :o

Some older players might get called since it's probably thier last chance at winning something with the albicelestes. Crespo, Pato, Ayala, ext...

But I'd like to see alot of young players. It will probably be a mix of both.

you'll probably see lucho get called and if he's healthy aimar as well. Upfront I would like to see aguero and milito(if crespo's not there) start. In the back I think burdisso, heinze, ayala, zabaleta, milito, rodriguez and garay will definatly be there. As for the midfield messi is a sure thing as well as maxi, gago and mascherano. I think belluschi will get a shot, palacio, sosa, cambiasso and saviola. As for the rest of the guys, I don't know. Will have to wait and see

I really hope things start changing for carlitos. IMO our most dangerous player when healthy and on the right team. I got high hopes for him and I hope he's there playing like the carlitos that we all know.

I myself never thought I'd say these two things, one is that I agree with Illrod3 and two, Veron should be recalled for the Copa. Yes we need to give our youth some exposure but we need just as badly some veteran leadership. I don't like Veron as a player but after what he did last term I do respect his ability to lead young players. Now that being said, yeah he totally let us down in the WC, he was supposed to be our Maestro.

El Pato is another veteran that should go. He's been really solid for the NT since the WC, I also believe that if doesn't get fouled, we stand a better chance beating Germany. Last chance at silverware and after the bashing he's taken, he earned it. Ustari will go but he'll get his big chance in the Olympics and from there who knows. Same really goes for Pupi and Ayala, this could be their last chance to win something and it's not like this just the torneo verano.

Based on what happens over the next few weeks to a month, don't be surprised if you here Romans name pop back up. Some of you'll will flame me for saying it but if he sets Futbol Argentino on fire you know it'll happen.

We can all dare to dream! Under your stated circumstances, Roman's return to the NT would be fantastic.

As for our Copa America team...I don't care what stage of their career a particular player is in, or whether they will play in 2010 etc... We need to field a team to win this tournament!

Now, before I get labeled as a Roman basher, let me say that I don't doubt his ability at all, he is as talented player as you can find, however he is not for the NT. I don't think that he has the mind and heart to play for the Seleccion. IMO, his style of play dictates that you must center the team around him and play at his pace. That's ok when you are Boca or Villareal but not when you are Argentina. Also, he is a very picky and delicate player, who seems whimsical at times that's why I don't think he is mentally ready for such a leadership role. He couldn't take critiscism after the last WC and he won't be able to take the critiscism thats' to come if he comes back. It will affect his play and he will quit again shortly. He will be better off playing in Boca where he will be protected by the team's faithful. I say that he lost his chance when he quit on the Seleccion.

I think we should take the best.We haven't won anything in a very long time. And it is well over due.Take our best players in Europe and a few from that are playing in Argentina. As for Veron being called back? Why not. I was against him being called back some months back but after seeing him play this year with Estudiantes I think he deserves it.Not many players come back from Europe to their country after making so much money and playing in huge clubs, come back and play the way he has.

Goalies:
Carrizo
Ustari
Sessa

Defenders:
Gabriel Milito
Ferarri
Ayala
Heinze
Burdisso
Zabaleta
Zanetti

Midfielders:
Mascherano
Gago
Veron
Lucho
Messi
D'Alessandro
Beslluschi
*Maxi Rodriuguez
Cambiasso

Forwards:
Saviola
Crespo
Pavone
Palacio

Would add Tevez also but his lack of plauing in Westham might have a setback on him.Same goes with Mascherano.

*Maxi Rodriguez is just a thought since he coming back from a serious injury and will take him some more time to get fit.

If you're going to include Crespo, Zanetti, Ayala, Veron, and some of the older players than Pato should be on that list without question.

Only one Zarate in attack?!! you have to have at least two Zarates, one inside, outside.

If Zarate's attacking we only need one :)
