Been trying to figure out the significance of scarves in soccer. I've seen a few mentions of going to buy a scarf from your club, wearing a scarf to a game (even in hot weather sometimes!) or having your favorite club's scarf, etc. on this board and outside of BS too. Googled to no avail on the subject. Is there anyone out there who can explain what importance scarves have to the sport?

Yeah, they keep you warm.

They were around along time ago, before the luxurious stadiums of modern day and just stuck.

Scarves keep you warm (duh) as someone has mentioned - which is essential, especially in Northern European football, and it was also a way of nailing your colours to the mast and showing which team you are supporting in the days before this commercialised era of replica kits and all of the other merchandise available now.

They are the original way of showing which team you are supporting.

So long as you don't actually wear the scarf by nailing it on! :D Thanks, everyone.
