How many times would you get hit by the ball if you were stationed in the PA? Thanks for this jem!

Don't confuse this with the proposal for a 5th official as a spare AR as tried in the last World Cup. That would really mean 7 officials posted around the field.

In the last WC, FIFA had a hard enough time getting the 4 officials to referee in a proper manner. Imagine if the total was increased? He's out of his mind.....

Yep, and there speaks the voice of a man who knows very little about refereeing, and more to the point, grassroots football.

I think you've missed his point. He is suggesting having more officials with decision making power or at least the power to suggest and inform the Referee would improve the accuracy of decisions.

Of course, I have personally football could use a goal judge who stands off the pitch a yard just to the side of the goal - to judge ball over the line, which is easier than new goal line technology. They have a guy like this in hockey. Maybe if you had something like that you could have this person keeping an eye on play within the penalty area.

That said... I personally think this UEFA president is talking crazy.

This all but eliminates what so many of use bitch about. Gets more eyes closer to the action to make better calls. Minimizes diving, better fouls calls. Not 5 but how about 2?

Due to the amount of "ITOOTR" calls, this is a bad idea. Then you basically have two different matches going on in each half (assuming each referee has responsibility for 1/2 the field). People need to simply accept that part of the game is human error, and no amount of referees on the field will fix it all.

No, I understood what he was saying perfectly. How about having extra eyes on the Portugal-England match...would that have stopped the parade of cards? It is difficult enough getting World Class referees from a pool that would include countries where top leagues don't exist. My point is the referees who get the finals and the semi finals come from a very small pool. would you want another official working with a Colina? I think not. The officiating isn't broken, but the mentality of the players is broken. The diving and the cheating needs to be stopped at all levels.

This may work well in some places. However, especially in ND we are always short of referees and adding more referees to games would be impossible and probably lead to less games played and less chances for kids to grow in a competitive environment.
