The sad story of Danny Karbassiyoon--Gunnerblog (http://gunnerblog.com/?p=539)

Wow....kind of forget about Karbi over the last few months. What a horrible story....although probably more common than we know. A promising career killed by injury. I hope he finds success in whatever direction life takes him.

Okay, so the curling championships rang rings around the Reading-Aston Villa game this weekend, 360k viewers compared to 77k viewers. Cannot say I'm shocked that so few watched Reading, but a third of a million folks watched curling?

It is Canada we are talking about, not the US. I'm not sure if you caught that. And if you did, you shouldn't be surprised at so many Canadians tuned into a curling match. This and hockey are to biggies up there. Besides, the other soccer matches had good numbers.

I understand that the numbers are from Canada. But, having watched curling, I still find it hard to believe. The first guy (or woman) slides the rock-thing and the they second uses a broom-thing to clear/smooth/melt whatever the path. I know it's a cold weather sport. And I know (FFS, I get Eurosport 1 and 2, I'm used to hours of snooker, bi-athalon's, curling, etc) Canada is cold right now. BUT THESE ARE THE JR CHAMPIONSHIPS. What would the full championships draw. I just never thought there was anything more than a niche market, while footie was a mass audience game. guess i'm very much mistaken, at least on this weekend. From the globe and mail's website, regarding television viewership of sporting events:
"Saturday
Reading-Aston Villa. Sportsnet 77,000 Good match-up.
Manchester United-Charlton. Sportsnet 162,000 Excellent number.
Soccer. Portsmouth-Manchester City. Sportsnet 105,000 A weak match-up."
AND THEN:
"Curling. Jr. men's final. CBC 360,000 Fans tune in."
AND THEN:
"Curling. Jr. Women's final. CBC 309,000 About right for national curling audience."
