Best Defenders?

Curious on what u guys think are the best defenders currently.

off the top of my head i can think of

(no particular order)

Maldini (even though hes getting up there in age)
Nesta
Canavarro,
Thuram
Candela
R. Carlos
Cafu
Walter Samuel

I agree with most of the players u listed. But Roberto Carlos? He's got to be one of the worst defenders of all......He just scored an own goal the other day againts mallorca....If I had to put him in a category it would be striker.....I think the reason he plays defense is that he doesnt fit anywhere else.......He's still one of the great players of the Game though......

lol doesnt fit anywhere, well he is a good defender, definetely not a pure defender but i would have to say that he is the best in the position that he plays, whatever that position is called.

1. Lilian Thuram, his speed and skill in the air are unmatchable.

2. Alessandro Nesta, wow this guy is quick, and has an unmatched field vision.

3. Jamie Carragher, hes been up against the very best and hasnt let liverpool down.

4. Rio Ferdinand, his speed and tackling ability makes him a difficult opponent to beat.

5. Sami Hyypia, great in the air, passing ability is excellent

does it seem like im not serious? yeah i did say Carragher. I'm not a liverpool fan in the least, but hes lightning fast and tackles exceptionally well.

I didnt include R. Carlos on the list because hes too offensive minded and is too damn short to win 50/50's over taller players. Nice free kick taker though.

if you dont have chivu on your short list then you havent seen him so its not your fault... but he is simply outstanding - IMO lizerazu is also pretty damn underheralded for a back with his credentials - i realize marquez is a love/hate guy around here, but when hes not in a maniacal mood, the cat is smooth
