I chose to sleep in.
[shatner] I just. Couldn't. Bring. Myself. To care. [/hooker's a good cop!]
I mean, it's not like anyone's gonna get a Pulitzer for their coverage of the 2007 Galaxy Open Tryouts.

No offense, but, doesn't anybody else write blogs? Why is this one person's blog always on the front page?
I'm sure this is a fine blog - but, surely, there must be some others that are pretty good, too?

I was expecting you to strap on your adidas and show those pups how it's done oldskool.

If I may briefly interrupt the flow of people criticizing Dan Loney for his questionable taste in avatars and his ability to irritate people by keeping his blog on BS's front page...
NPR's daily business report, Marketplace, sent a reporter, and their story will be running tonight (barring a stockmarket crash or a spike in oil prices or something or the Fed raising interest rates to 43%).
It will be available online tomorrow. Will it win a Pulitzer? As 8-time Pulitzer Prize winner Kent Brockman says, "Only time. Will tell."

And two were picked:
French, ex-Olympique Marsaille youth team attacker 22 year old Laurent Merlin who spent time with 2nd league Chatreaux
Portugese, ex-Rhode Island Stingray 24-year old midfielder Rui Forte

Yeah, yeah, Carrie Underwood won Grammy Awards after entering the same competition as people dressed in chicken suits burping the Canadian national anthem. So it's not necessarily a disgrace to discover players through a cattle call.
Still. Are there no clubs in France that Merlin could have signed with? He's in for a nasty shock if he thinks MLS pays a decent salary.
Did the Revolution fire all their scouts? It's not like Fortes wasn't playing anywhere.
Okay, at some point, I'm going to have to accept what wonderful and uplifting stories these are. But - we're going to use an international spot, even a transitional spot, on a former second-division player? How far over the cap are we, for Pete Vagenas' sake? At least Fortes has a green card.
(As always, by "We," I mean, the famous Russian dystopian novel that influenced Orwell.)

Actually yes - 8 years ago.

It's all in the exchange rate. That's the real reason Beckham is coming here.

If that many people showed up just to tryout for the chance to play with Beckham, I'm sure a few players wouldn't balk at the thought of playing with him for a less than ample salary.

Actually, that was sort of the tongue-in-cheek point of the marketplace report I mentioned on the last page: the teaser said that given how much money they're spending on Beckham, the Galaxy would probably be happy to find guys willing to play for $3 per day (warning: said joke is made in the broadcast by professional nob head Steve Cohen)

you can listen to the report here, or scroll down and read the transcript. A damn shame, though, that we have to rely on public radio rather than Dan Loney.
