View Full Version : Where we stand

Some people might not have considered the US game valuable because of the veterans we used. I however, think it was useful because now we see what we have and we can now build from that.
This thread will be dedicated to the players in which might have a chance to show there stuff in the new Hugo era. I have compiled a list of names that seem to be in the radar of Hugol. I also included youth prospects that seem to have potential.
Porteros
Guillermo Ochoa, Oswaldo Sanchez, Jose de Jesus Corona, Moises Munoz, Sergio Bernal
The goalie possesion seems to be on lock down for the forseeable future. For now it is still Oswaldo's position. But the rising talent of Guillermo Ochoa is building a following which might lead Hugo to go with the populist possession of trying out Memo. Corona and Munoz were mainstays from the Lavolpe era. However, playing in teams that struggle year to year has not favored them. And Sergio Bernal is included because he is known by Hugo, and as we all know every coach brings along some of his buddies.
Defensas
Rafael Marquez, Carlos Salcido, Ricardo Osorio, Jaime Lozano, Gonzalo Pineda, El Maza Rodriguez, Joaquin Beltran, Israel Castro, Fausto Pinto, Jonny Magallon, Diego Martinez, Margarito Gonzalez, Luis Robles, Horacio Cervantes, Joel Huiqui, Julio Cesar Dominguez, Leobardo Lopez, Oscar Mascorro, Diego Cervantes, "El Jagger" Martinez, Marcelo Alatorre, Aaron Galindo, Diego Ordaz, Hugo Sanchez, Edgar Duenas, Efrain Velarde, Edgar Eduardo Castillo, Oscar Rojas.
In Hugo's customary 4-4-2 style. It would seem that 3 of the 4 spots seem to be locked. With only the left side in question. However, we never know when tactics might change. A linea de tres is not out of the question, no matter how much Hugo loves the 4-4-2. We also might get Rafa to move up into the defensive mid which would leave an opening in the middle. Luckily enough, we have a plethora of players to choose from. Hopefully, Hugo decides to go the unconventional route and try out players such as Robles, El Jagger, Dominguez.
Medios
Andres Guardado, Gerardo Torrado, Pavel Pardo, Gerardo Galindo, Alberto Medina, Juan Carlos Mosqueda, Sergio Amaury Ponce, Juan Carlos Medina, Angel Eduardo Reyna, Patricio Araujo, Manuel "Tripa" Perez, Christian Valdez, Luis Alonso Sandoval, Jaime Correa, Luis Perez, Ramon Morales, Elgabry Rangel, Israel Lopez.
We can safely say that we only have the left side pretty much sewn up. the right side seems to be Beto Medina's spot to lose. In the middle we need some new guns. Pavel is getting up in age and Torrado never has recovered his form from 02.
Delanteros
"Bofo" Bautista, "Kikin" Fonseca, Omar Bravo, Jared Borgetti, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Juan Carlos Cacho, Emmanuel Cerda, Luis Angel Landin, Carlos Ochoa, Aldo de Nigris, Carlos Esquivel, Nery Castillo, Carlos Vela, Gio Dos Santos
This is the big question for Hugo. How long will he last depending on the veterans and the guys who have never fully achieved their hype? And as you can see this is an anemic state we are in with our forwards. And it ain't new.

What happened to Aaron Galindo is a shame. He had a great Confed Cup an d would be undoubtedly in the back 4 for Hugo. It could have been Osorio & Salcido on the laterales, with Galindo and Rafa in the middle. Hopefully he regains his form in Sweden with Grasshoppers and is ready by the big cups in the summer. As much as I hate to admit it, we have to try out Nery at the forward positio, Omar and Kikin just cant cut it, and Borgetti is on his way out the door. We cant rely on 17 yr olds in Gio and Vela, we need Nery to play and be effective. The team is in good shape, and I believe the main problem is the fact that some of the older players need to be let go, their legacy is great but its time to say goodbye
My list of players who must never again be called up:
Borgetti-age, ineffectiveness---- Kikin: too slow and unskilled
Torrado: sucks--- Ramoncito: He's still good, but its time for the youngsters
Bravo- mental block, give his spot to Landin or Cacho

Galindo is not in Sweden, but in Switzerland. Regardless, he's not in a top European league at all, so I guess that unless his form really improves and he is picked by a side in one of the big 5 or playing Champions he's not going to regain his old form any time soon.

Oh my god these guys play in Europe they must be good.
Manuel Rivera plays in the great league from Hungary.
De Nigris is somewhere in Turkey, not with one of the big teams in Turkey.
And Iturriaga has left a mark on the bench of Bilbao.
Not very, impressive.
I did forget about Loquito though. I'll give you that. But its not like he is playing an important part with Tigres as we speak.

How do you know that iturriaga, rivera, and de nigris "might" not get a chance. Yet you put players like I. Lopez and G. Galindo that aren't even NT material. :p
Oscar Mascorro :D
The fact is if Iturriago starts playing more with Bilbao, Hugo will call him up. He sure isn't that far either.

Israel Lopez and Gery Galindo were both called up to camp by Hugo.
And Oscar Mascorro is a decent cb who never got a chance because he plays for crappy teams. Put him in with a decent backline and he ain't bad.

Um.
I could be wrong, but I remember that doofus only playing 2 games.
What a great showing!
Then again, finishing 4th in the tournament showed the world we were here to stay.
4 out of 8.

But 7 good teams, better than anything CONCACAF has to offer.

Lets say he brings two different teams to both copas during the summer.
Hugo's favorites would be included, with some fresh faces for the gold cup.
Something like this maybe:

Interesting lineups. I'd still rather see Ochoa on the other team, though I guess he'll get quality international experience in the Libertadores. I am not very confident of the Copa Oro lineup. I'd like to see Landin and Cacho playing in the friendlies before starting them both up top. What Martinez is the starting right midfielder on that team? Is it Diego M?

I'd put Cacho and Landin together because they know how each other plays.
And its not like we have a ton of options in the forward position.
I put Ochoa with the Copa Oro lineup because he would actually play and show his stuff. If he were to go to Copa America he'd be on the bench.
And yes I put Diego Martinez on the right mid position. He is versatile enough to play that position.

I agree that Diego could be good in the midfield. And I'd only take Ochoa to Venezuela to start, not sit on the bench. The Landin/Cacho doubt I have is because they rarely start together on Pachuca. They've played together in the 2nd half at times, but neither Meza nor Trejo would start them together.

I kinda like the copa oro line-up. i'd rather it be the other way around though, and they play copa america. But that is a topic for a different thread i suppose. I'm going to avoid saying we should start preparing for the next world cup, but i definitly think mexico needs to start exploring other possibilities and deepening our team. I would play a young exciting team in copa america that looks something like:
------------------------Ochoa------------------------------
(i donno yet, but not castro)---Galindo----Cervantes-----Magallon---
----Martinez------Correa----Mosqueda--------guardado--------
---------------Landin/Cacho----Nery/Someone else-------------
yea... needs work, i'll think about it some more.

Most of Panfilo's lineups look good, but I would put Bofo in one of them. He hasn't had enough chances imo and I still think he'll come through. Calmado.
As for the confed cup, we did place fourth but I was quite impressed with how well we played. The only game I wasn't impressed with was the one against greece. We we're oh so close and should've won that game against the argentines, but we changed to a defensive stance and that cost us big. We outplayed them and they won, but they also outplayed us at the last copa america and we won. The ball bounces funny sometimes. All in all that cup was still a great performance in my eyes.

I think we have better left backs, and plenty of them.
Jimmy, Guardado, Ramoncito, Pineda, and the list goes on, Olvera when he's healthy, el jagger can play there, even salcido
