While the Mexican sides are hands-down favorites to win the cup, the MLS teams still need to prove that they can make the semis. Both are probably slight favorites in their respective series, but considering the overall dismal record since 2000 it is anything but a given. Anyway, let's look at some numbers...
All-time Competitive Record vs. Costa Rica
1999 Chicago vs. Alajuelense 1:1 (4:5 Pen)
2000 DC United vs. Alajuelense 2:1
2001 Saprissa vs. Columbus 2:0
2001 Columbus vs. Saprissa 1:1
2003 Alajuelense vs. New England 4:0
2003 New England vs. Alajuelense 3:1 (Played in CRC)
2004 Alajuelense vs. San Jose 3:0
2004 San Jose vs. Alajuelense 1:0
2004 Saprissa vs. Chicago 2:0
2004 Chicago vs. Saprissa 2:1
2005 Kansas City vs. Saprissa 0:0
2005 Saprissa vs. Kansas City 2:1 AET
2006 New England vs. Alajuelense 0:0 (Played in BER)
2006 Alajuelense vs. New England 1:0
2006 LA Galaxy vs. Saprissa 0:0
2006 Saprissa vs. LA Galaxy 3:2 AET
Game-by-Game: 4 Wins, 5 Ties, 7 Losses
K.O. Meeting: 9 / MLS 1, CRC 8
Summary: A clear edge for the Ticos, but this is the first time a team other than Saprissa and Alajuelense is involved.
All-time Competitive Record vs. Honduras
1999 DC United vs. Olimpia 1:0
2000 LA Galaxy vs. Real Espana 0:0 (5:3 Pen)
2000 LA Galaxy vs. Olimpia 3:2
2002 Olimpia vs. San Jose 0:1
2002 San Jose vs. Olimpia 3:1
2003 Motagua vs. LA Galaxy 2:2
2003 LA Galaxy vs. Motagua 1:0
Game-by-Game: 5 Wins, 2 Ties, 0 Losses
K.O. Meetings: 5 / MLS 5, HON 0
Summary: History clearly favors MLS. Not a single win (!) for the Catrachos.

Do we know if away goals will be factoring in this year (which would have eliminated Saprissa at the hands of MLS clubs the last two years) or the will it be the status quo?

Houston Dynamo arent going anywere they will be "cooked" in "la olla magica" . I predict a 3-0 win by Puntarenas in the first leg and a tie in the second leg, Puntarenas is way better than them.

Fixed.
Apparently Puntarenas has 2-3 NT players, does that make them the Costa Rica National Team 'C' ?

You mean the same away goals many MLS fans like to criticize in European football?
I assume it will be the status quo...

This cup is not often interesting, but I like to follow it.
The MLS sides have found that on the road the calls always go against them (multiple red cards, penalties, etc) and that at home they do not get much of a home field advantage in crowd nor officiating.
I think we may see a more diversified semifinal field than in recent versions of this competition, but really its about who will match up with Chivas and Pachuca and whether or not its an all Mexican final.
I definitely think it is a disadvantage for the MLS sides that their away games are reffed by Mexican refs.

Didn't know that Navarro was Mexican always thought he was Canadian.
If anything I would imagine that the Mexican teams would rather face the MLS sides then the Central Americans. Since at least the Central Americans play them close unlike the MLS sides.

Hello trolling mod that should surely have at least a yellow card by now.

I realize that they probably do not teach Geography in Colombia, but Washington DC is in the United States of America.

MY bad I read that wrong. However, I do stand my point that the Mexican clubs would rather play against MLS sides. I'm sure SwissGZ could post the scores of MFL teams vs Central American teams and also MFL vs MLS teams.

Chivas and Pachuca are already slated to be in the Copa Sudamericana (at least according to the not always accurate wikipedia entry). What happens to the Copa Sudamericana entry if one of those teams finishes second? Do the two semifinal losers have a 3rd place game?

I want to say that CONCACAF just chooses the team. Last year they picked LDA and they year before they picked DC United.

I've never seen it in writing, but when a Mexican team occupies the runner-up spot, a non-Mexican semifinalist usually gets the invitation. The formula seems to be 2 MFL teams + One. That's how DC United and Alajuelense got in.

I do have the MFL vs. MLS stats, but that's a discussion for the semifinals. I will say this however, they are strongly in favor of Mexico. The only teams that have managed to trouble MFL sides in recent years are Saprissa and Alajuelense (although Olimpia took Pumas into overtime in 2005.)

There are two reasons for this IMO.
First, the Mexican league is both a better and each team is deeper.
Second, the quality of the top MLS teams is stagnates and they aren't able to reach the level of some of the late 90s teams. DC was very unlucky not to win back to back CCCs in 98 and 99, and I think if they didn't have a pair of injuries vs Necaxa that they would have done so. New England and Houston are both teams that could have reached DC level if they had kept their current rosters and added a Ronaldo or a Zidane or an Etcheverry or a Nowak and then probably challenged for a CCC. However, only Red Bull and LA have used their DP slots and New England actually got worse instead of better.
It will be interesting to see if either LA or NY can actually build an MLS team to go around their marquee players.
