In a few years Mikel Obi will be one of the top CM's in the world. He is only 19 and is making a huge impact for Chelsea in the champions league. He has already benched the legend Makalele and has had more of an impact than Ballack and Lampard in Chelseas last 6 or 7 games. He will be on top of the world in 2 or 3 years at this rate.

Well I'd say a few of the best would be Iniesta, Kaka, Scholes, Gerrard even though by his usual standards he hasn't had the best season, Lampard, Fabregas is just brillant to watch and also Pirlo is one hell of a player.

lamps and xavi are hardly deep lying. Lamps is a bit more offensive then anything and Xavi is a pure box to box central midfeilder like steven gerrard.

Gattuso goes foward often and plays central midfeild in milans diamond (pirlo being the dm kaka being the am)

It is also apparent that the everyone in the thread was disregarding these sub sects of the central midfeild position.

Well these positions are really subjective, these players can go from "box-to-box" to "defensive" to "central" to "attacking" depending upon the formation and the tactics the coach chooses. That is why we must use the term "central midfielder" broadly.

Kaka is no a CM. He is a attacking midfielder. Best CM's right now are Essien (can have a big impact on any team/game), Deco (skillfull touches), Pirlo (keeps the game moving).
