If his good form continues through next year Mathieu Flamini might deserve a mention. He has been Arsenals most consistent midfield player this year. Tons of energy, good tackler, good passer and comes up with goals when needed (some of the spectacular variety).
I have been very much pleased and surprised by his play this year.
I think he rates a mention if not inclusion in the group yet.

(In response to Mintone) Flamini was solid against Milan and has done well all season, definately deserves a mention for his importance on his team.

I've always rated Deco ever since I saw him play for Portugal many years back. He is so technically sound.
Xavi is extremely underrated imo. Fabulous technical and passing ability from box to box.

Practically invented it. It being the role in which one is a glorified defender that plays higher up the pitch and has nothing to contribute to the attack. People call it the 'Makelele role' for a reason. Redondo played from that position, but he was a way different player and actually made contributions to the attack.

I think Essien is a comparable type of player to Redondo. Lying deep to give support to the back line, but capable of generating the attack as well. Essien does get on the score sheet more often than Redondo though.
Ironically, Makelele plays alongside him.

I think Pirlo is the BEST CM right now, he's fenomenal as deep-lying playmaker...
Flamini is wonderfull too...
Fabregas is more offensivly...
