I do, however, have to applaud the FIGC if they are serious about cancelling the season and figuring out how to change the culture of soccer there that allows these kinds of incidents. Like I said in the Rossi thread, its time for the clubs, leagues, supporters' clubs, and police to say "enough is enough" and to remove the trouble-makers.

Apt that I chose to call this thread "mercurial"--perhaps the perfect word to describe the current state of Italian football.

Cancelling the season would be unfair to hard working teams like Roma, who have been THE only side hat actually deserves to win the league. It would be logical for cheating teams like Inter, Lazio and Milan.

I started this in the Rossi thread but realised that it doesnt belong there...

The Serie A is a screwed up league but the one positive is that they are showing an interest, if very minor, to do something about it. The head in the sand approach that has been going on for a decade has lead to empty arenas due to the violence and this death was just the logical consequence of it all. it's only a few weeks ago that a fireman lost his hand on Sicily due to a bomb.

The clubs have been reluctant to distance themselves from their ultras and that problem exists in northern Italy as well as in the south. I think that all the shock from everyone involved in football in italy over this death is hypocritical. It is horrible, I do not deny that, but it was bound to happend. When you have riots every other game. People throwing vespas on the away fans on the lower tier, a number of games aborted due to violence and still don't recongnize that it is a big problem and that something big is just around the corner... well then you are stupid.

I distanced myself from Italian football many years ago when the clubs refused to distance themselves from their right and left wing extremist followers. This summer was just the icing on the cake for me.

What scares me is that I see the same things happening in France and Spain right now. Southern Spain is onthe brik of their first "accident" and France has alredy had theors, yet noone seems to want to do anything about it. The clubs are so scared to alienate their most fanatical fans that they take no action whatsoever. I find this very strange because since the British clubs faced the violent supporter culture the game became more popular than ever.

Italy is where Engalnd was in the 80's Spain and France is getting there... it's scary for football that 3 out of 4 of the biggest leagues in the world are seemingly ignorant to the problems that will inevitably come. I fear the inpact on world football if somethingdoes not happend soon. England had their steel bath.. the rest of europe must have it as well.. and soon

I don't agree that Roma would be cheated. They are one of the teams with the most violent ultrás. The rome derbys have had more than their fair share of violence and Roma has been just as flat as the rest of the italian clubs to counter this. They are responsible for this just as much as everyone else. I like what Roma try to do on the pitch, but they are a part of the bigger probelm...

What shocks me is that such things are happening elsewhere in Europe as well and not much attention is being paid. In Ligue 1 things such as the activities surrounding the Bulogne Boys are being addressed, La Liga remains untouched. Racism increases every year, none of the penalties are harsh enough or even effective, hooliganism is at an all time high, the Real Madrid match last weekened was a prime example of it. Absolute lack of class from fans and players just oozes out of it every week, yet nothing is done about it.

I quoted you from the Rossi thread to bring the discussion here...

I agree with you to an extent.. the boulonge boys in Paris are recieving some interest. But there has been a death in france as well. it was nancy supporters if i'm not mistaken, and if I am don't hold it agains me, it's just for discussions sake. People in France are staring to realise it's a problen, however they are some years away from what's happening in Italy. The seed is in the ground and it's growing. Still a forcesful reaction is still far away, I fear it will have to be another death before somthing radical happends in France. Spain has not yet even entertained the thought of radical action...

You have to excuse my repeated posting.. drinking brings up the debater in me ;)

You took the words out my mouth. This stoppage has nothing to do with cheating, matchfixing, etc. This has to do with the ridiculous amount of violence that is allowed to pass in Serie A. There is hardly a team that is innoncent of these charges...I'm positive every team in the league has ultras that cause trouble around matches. These 2 deaths in the past week have finally tipped the issue over the edge. A one week break can't solve this problem, which is ingrained into the Italian Liga. Serious changes have to be made before the league can resume play.

That being said, Italy likes to boast alot and then follow up with weak actions. Just look at the matchfixing trials, those teams were supposed to be sunk to Serie C and seriously hurt, yet instead they'll all be fine next year. So I hope they actually mean this.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that, I was speaking purely about on the pitch. I for one can't credit Inter's success this season not only because of the post-World Cup scandal and relegations but also because of the behind-the scenes dealings involving Moratti and co.

But you're right, The Curva Sud is some of Italy's worst.

I'd agree with you on the league though, SirManc. I think Roma have been quite good this season, and I only credit Inter's success to the matchfixing, as well as their acquisition of world class players for chump change due to the problem. Roma would be my choice for the title...though it doesn't much matter anymore.

White hankerchiefs and boos as Real Madrid lose 1-0 at home to Levante. They were awful, although Ruud should have been awarded a penalty.
They've scored 3 goals in last 8 games.

If Schalke wouldn't have beaten Bremen, this would have been a perfect day.

Anyone going to watch Le Classique?

I forgot about that one. I was going to watch Barca but the Marseille game should be good too.
