Boston Devices a Cartoon Marketing Ploy

Jan 31, 5:44 PM (ET)
By KEN MAGUIRE

BOSTON (AP) - Nine blinking electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city Wednesday in what turned out to be a marketing campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. At least one of the devices depicts a character giving the finger.

Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless.

"It's a hoax - and it's not funny," said Gov. Deval Patrick.

Turner Broadcasting, parent company of Cartoon Network, said the devices were part of a promotion for the TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

"The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger," Turner said in a statement. It said the devices have been in place for two to three weeks in 10 cities: Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Austin, Texas, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

"We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger," the company said.

Police said only that they were investigating where the device came from. The Department of Homeland Security said there are no credible reports of other devices being found elsewhere in the country.

An angry Mayor Thomas Menino said a stiff penalty will be pursued against whoever was responsible for the devices.

"It's about keeping a city on edge. It's about public safety," he said.

Authorities said some of the objects looked like circuit boards or had wires hanging from them.

The first device was found at a subway and bus station underneath Interstate 93, forcing the shutdown of the station and the highway.

Later, police said four calls, all around 1 p.m., reported devices at the Boston University Bridge and the Longfellow Bridge, both of which span the Charles River, at a Boston street corner and at the Tufts-New England Medical Center.

The package near the Boston University bridge was found attached to a structure beneath the span, authorities said.

Subway service across the Longfellow Bridge between Boston and Cambridge was briefly suspended, and Storrow Drive was closed as well.

Wanda Higgins, a 47-year-old Weymouth resident and a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, heard about the threat as she watched television news coverage while preparing to leave work at 4 p.m.

"I saw the bomb squad guys carrying a paper bag with their bare hands," Higgins said. "I knew it couldn't be too serious."

Messages seeking additional comment from the Atlanta-based Cartoon Network were left with several publicists.

"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is a cartoon with a cultish following that airs as part of the Adult Swim late-night block of programs for adults on the Cartoon Network. A feature length film based on the show is slated for release March 23.

The surreal series centers on a talking milkshake (Master Shake), fries (Frylock) and a meatball (Meatwad).

The cartoon also includes two trouble-making, 1980s-graphic-like characters called "mooninites," named Ignignokt and Err - who were pictured on the suspicious devices. They are known for making the obscene hand gesture depicted on the devices.

God help us if we ever get a stadium in Boston, they'll take a look at the Riders antics, and lock us all up :D

People are retarded.

Whatever. Scare all the old people. I know what an LED throwie is. I'm not going to call the f'ing bomb squad over it.

Also, mission accomplished advertising execs.

ATHF made a fantastic comback this year after an extremely disappointing fourth season.

Their marketing campaign for the movie has been so bizarre, I thought it was one big joke.

Yeah. Although I can see the bill for all the bomb squads, emergency services, etcetera being presented to Turner Broadcasting :)

That's fine with me, and I'm sure it is with Ted too.

What a f*cking joke! The hysteria is amazing.

WAKE UP PEOPLE, IT'S A F*CKING BOX WITH A CARTOON ON IT.

Are we in rainbow alert now? Hopefully they don't mistake my cellphone for a detonation device and arrest me. I am going to go kill myself at George Orwell's gravesite now.

I see that the use of "9/11 changed everything" as a universal excuse for illogic, lazy thinking and rampant paranoia has made its way up from Washington and landed in Boston City Hall. :(

You place black, LED dotted panels with battery packs on bridge underpasses in a major metropolitan area post 9/11 and people are quick to dismiss it as nonsensical overreaction?

You're kidding me, right?

It was incredibly stupid on Turner's part as well as their ad agency.

I'm all for viral ad campaigns, but this was just plain stupid.

I feel bad for all those people inconveinenced by the emergency response and I'll actually come out and say that I was impressed by the handling of the situation by the local and federal authorities. While the situation was far from anything terrorist related, the quick response was commendable and reassuring that if something did happen in the future, there is a system in place to handle it.

From what I understand you could not see the cartoon chartacter at all because it was daytime.

Given this campaign has already been up and running in other cities for as long as two weeks, I want to know why Boston is the only city where this particular response occured.

This reminds me of how it took people in Boston twenty years to remember that not every storm was like the Blizzard of 78 and stop going nuts everytime the weather said there might be snow, but at least that overreaction didn't normally include people who were significantly responsible for public safety.

Reactions by public officials that are more harmful then the threats they intend to counter are not good, and 9/11 didn't change that fact at all.

Given this campaign has already been up and running in other cities for as long as two weeks, I certainly want to know why Boston is the only city where this particular response occured.

Why?

Because as soon as someone, anyone, alerts the local authorities about a possible bomb (or other out of place package, box, or any other suspicious looking item), in light of the heightened awareness and sensitivity to terrorist activities, especially in a 9/11 associted city, the local and federal authorities have an unenviable task of reacting to each and every situation in a worst case fashion, analyzing the situation and taking the appropriate measures.

Fortunately, this appeared to be overkill. But again, the response to the initial problem was excellent.

I can't explain why this didn;t happen anywhere else. Maybe people are more into ATHF elsewhere, are used to seeing stuff placed on bridges, or are just plain oblivious to their surroundings.

Frankly, I don't care what others responses were to this. I'm just happy with how we handled it.

We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it - and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit on a hot stove lid again - and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore.
Yesterday's events are a perfect example of the error Twain is describing.

The events of 9/11 did not mean that every occurence that alarms us is equivalently serious. The inability to make this type of distinction can only lead to paralysis and greatly lowered safety for us all.

did you see what the things look like unlit? anyone who thought these were bombs is an imbicile.
it was handled stupidly and we (rightfully) should be the butt of jokes across the country.
at least one (I think both) of the guys arrested are 27 and 28 yr old artists/art school students just looking to put a little $ in their pocket to make ends meet. Menino is an ass and is over reacting. he's punishing the wrong people. He's been made to look like such a fool, he thinks being a hardass will somehow make us forget how poorly this was handled.

Well, I feel safer now.

And with anyone traveling by air to this country now required to shell out $100 for a government ID, this country is more secure from evil terrorists everyday!!!!
