I have to list 2.
1. The Hand of God game. Growing up in the U.S. playing all the American sports I didn't know all that much about soccer back then, but a weird confluence of events had me at England v. Argentina in the '86 WC. Incredible game. Like I always tell everyone: I didn't see him use his hand either. The scintillating 2nd was just too much, and seemed to happen as quick as the first.
2. San Diego Flash v. somebody, A-League, circa 2001. Down 2 goals and 2 men, the Flash storm back to send the game into overtime and ultimately win the game. Most amazing football match I've ever seen from beginning to end in person.

Off the top of my head, the Bolton 4 Newcastle 3 game a few years back was pretty good.

The Los Angeles Wolves (Wolverhampton) vs The Washington Whips (Aberdeen FC) in the final at the Coliseum in 1967..
LA won 6-5.. :D
That was the wildest game I can remember being to..
I've been to more "famous" matches, WC ..etc.. that would be more impressive to most here but that match in LA is still #1 on my list..

Easy! Rangers 2 Marseille 2 from the 92/93 season in the champions league. What a game. The atmosphere was up there with an old firm game.

The biggest game I've ever been to was Brazil vs Sweden USA 94 WC semifinal. But in truth it was a pretty dull game. The roofless arena kind of warped the atmosphere a bit. Watching Brazil put 8 last yeard past the UAE was kind of fun.
I can't say I've been to any real "classics" come to think of it. The UAE cup final in 2005 was quite good though. Al-Ain 3 - Al Wahda 1 but it wasn't settled until deep into extra time. Very intense game in which either teams could have won.

Eh?
European* football has survived for many a year without roofs? And the atmosphere at big games is great.
*Please don't launch into the Eurosnob carry on, I only use the European analogy becuase I have only attended games in Europe, I just dont understand how the lack of a roof warps the atmosphere.

I don't know, I'm not a sound engineer but I find the semi covered stadiums you find in Europe just tend to absorb the sound better than fully open aired stadium - just from my experiences. It could also be that at a world cup semifinal, the crowd is split in two and there are also a lot of neutral fans as well so you don't get the same atmosphere as you would from a "home" crowd. Maybe it was the heat, maybe I just expected too much with it being a WC Semi final but I was a little disapointed with the atmosphere at the Rose Bowl, on that particular day.

I too thought yours was a strange comment. Some European stadiums have retractable roofs and they have a really bad reputation for atmosphere, the Ajax stadium is nicknamed the birdcage for that reason!

Italy vs Spain: QF, World Cup 1994.
Baggio used all his tricks to beat Spain. His winning goal was one of his best goals.

I knew that an incident took place at the game. I did not see what happened, but the Spanish players were excited over something. I still did not really know what happened.

1. Ecuador - Copsta Rica in Hamburg for the 2006 WC. It was my first WC game and Ecuador won!! What else can I say???
2. BVB - Wolfburg 2006. I was able to take my American wife to her first BVB game while in Germany for work and se loved it. BVB won 3-2 He went to the Sud Tribune.
3. Barcelona SC - Cerro Porteno in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 1996 (or 97) for Copa Libertadores. I had just moved to Ecuador and was looking for a club to support and my friends took me to this game. Barcelona was down by the a goal and ended up winning 3-2 in the last few minutes. The Estadio Monumental was just going off!! What a party.

As a Scotland fan the France game in October took some beating, but perhaps ties with Sweden at World Cup 90.
As a neutral I was lucky enough to be at two magnificent games in Germany last year. The USA v Italy game and the Germany v Italy semi-final, with the latter being simply the best game of football I have ever witnessed - passion, skill, atmosphere, drama and when will Italy ever have 7 forwards on the pitch at the same time again?

If I had to pick one, World Cup is the obvious choice, Croatia 2-2 Australia.

I was at that game too and I agree with your comments:- the crowd was surprisingly moribund, as was the game itself.
Best game I've seen was Banbury United 2 Hereford United 2 back in the days when Hereford were a non-league team. This was an FA Trophy game in a packed little ground with Banbury twice fighting back against the odds. And the 4k crowd created more atmosphere than the 90k at that Rose Bowl semifinal!
