I'm watching United - Brighton FA Cup final replay on ESPN Classic at the moment and something like 3 min. after the second United goal for 2:0, a significant part of the crowd started singing YNWA...
NOW, WHO'S FANS WERE THOSE?! And why?

Here's a write-up about the game:

I would guess that either:

a) Our fans were taking the piss out of Liverpool, since we were crusing to an FA Cup

or

b) The Brighton fans were taking the piss out of us, because Liverpool were the dominate side of the era

I've read a few accounts over the years saying that we did indeed sing it in the past, as did fans of many clubs but obviously it's mostly associated with the scousers. Others strongly disagree and say we only sang "other versions". One version of the story says that 83 (the year you mentioned) was in fact the last time it was sung by our fans before it got booed down at OT when they sang it the following season as champions and that's where the tradition of booing when they sing it started from.

There's always this old chestnut too. :)

Whilst the headline overdramatises the content there is the claim that it was sung at United before anywhere else. I' ve heard that before too but most will say that the crowd didn't actually join in as it was an operatic version of the song and whilst it may have been sung at Old Trafford first (if it's true) the first set of fans to actually sing it were Liverpool.

I feel a bit dirty.

When did the dippers start singing it ? I was reading one of Tom Clare’s write up and he said that he remembers United fans singing YNWA right after munich

A quick google comes up with '63. A post in the dippers forum on this site ( http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=327056 ) directs me to a post on another scouse board, apparently by someone who's clued up ( http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=29832.0 ).

Celtic fans will argue that they sang it first too.

What exactly is so bad about walking alone?
