I have the basics down, but every time I do it, it just comes out slightly weird (it's hard to describe exactly).

Are there any tips you would have for making it look professional?

You just hafta practice. I learned while in the Marines, and I still have to tie mine a couple times every time I need to wear one. Fortunately, at this point in my life, that isn't often.

Hi! Yes, now i know how to tie a bow tie (http://www.2tieatie.com/bow-tie.html)!!!
Earlier i was in the same situation in which you are today, I guess!

Let me share with you my experience...
I had to go for a grand occasion wherein it was important for me to have my bow-tie on to get a gentleman look at the dinner!

But I didn't have any one to help me with a good shaped bow-tie. Everytime i tried, my bow-tie took a weird look! Very unprofessional as you rightly say!

Then, my dad referred me a good source that guided me how to tie a bow tie and it worked great. This source is a website called www.2tieatie.com that helped me learn not only bow tie but 15 different neckties (http://www.2tieatie.com).

It was like WOW!!!

Now I know 5 neck-ties out of the 15 different that the site teaches:

The Windsor Knot (http://2tieatie.com/windsor-knot.html)
The Half-Windsor (http://2tieatie.com/half-windsor.html)
The Four-in-Hand Knot (http://2tieatie.com/four-in-hand-knot.html)
Pratt Knot (http://2tieatie.com/pratt-knot.html)
Oriental Knot (http://2tieatie.com/oriental-knot.html)
Kelvin Knot (http://2tieatie.com/kelvin-knot.html)
Nicky Knot (http://2tieatie.com/nicky-knot.html)
Victoria Knot (http://2tieatie.com/victoria-knot.html)
St. Andrew Knot (http://2tieatie.com/st-andrew-knot.html)
Plattsburgh Knot (http://2tieatie.com/plattsburgh-knot.html)
Cavendish Knot (http://2tieatie.com/cavendish-knot.html)
Grantchester Knot (http://2tieatie.com/gratchester-knot.html)
Hanover Knot (http://2tieatie.com/hanover-knot.html)
Balthus Knot (http://2tieatie.com/balthus-knot.html)

Hope this helps you...!!!! Cheers!!!
