Hey it's cool and all to see cars scream and smoke around a track. But I just don't understand the objective of a race.

drifting, when used in rally applications, makes sense.
drifting as the new "sport" with the excessive tire smoke, is pretty ridiculous.

Some kind of Japanese cultural expression.

Bah, it's another case of having a bunch of people measuring their skills in a new domain of 'excellence'.
After watching the clip, I come to think about that the configuration of roads in Japan and the fact that those are more agile and light than powerful may have initiated the trend. Funnily enough, it's the exact opposite of the US straight lines drag races with monstruous engines ! Another philosophy...
This said, some of the drifting in the scene seems legitimate to enhance cornering speed ; it's just the exaggerated moves that look like some kudos points grabbing attempt.
PS : Japanese Euro Beat is...Speshul...

I don't get it either. I've always seen it as a waste of good tires.

Hogan's son on the show "hogan knows best" was trying to become a "drifter". Dodge sponsored him in some race and gave him a viper to go up against everyone elses tricked out civics and accords. Needless to say he crashed the viper multiple times into the wall.... it was a pretty funny episode.
btw.. I've only watched that show once so dont judge me...
