There are obviously a ton of jerseys on ebay, and before i buy one, has anyone else had a bad experience? most of them are from south asia, which leads me to think they're probably rip-offs. Am I wrong here?

Do not buy a jersey from South Asia!
I have bought five Newcastle jerseys off EBay...
four were in excellent or very good condition, the fifth came from South Asia (which was the least expensive).
If you are gonna buy a jersey, buy it from someone reputable.

I heard this dude (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=gimako&sort=3&page=3&rows=25&since=-1&showpics=1&stab=0) consistently delivers the goods, though I don't know firsthand.

I bought some Dutch National Team jerseys from S.E. Asia for a rec league team of mine....for the price and the purpose it was a great choice and the quality was pretty solid.
I'll admit that on some of the pictures on ebay, the numbering and lettering can look a bit iffy, tho.

I just bought this jersey at The Onion Bag for $70. I dunno know the difference in quality, but I need an XXL and you can't get that size from Ebay 99% of the time...

I've purchased some very nice jerseys on ebay, but had some problems as well.
First, people deliver what they promise. If they never claim NWT (New With Tags), never claim authentic Nike/ Puma/whatever (may say it has a swoosh and not send you a Nike), and yet say "authentic replica, new, like the one's (insert team name here) worn in the world Cup," then buyer beware. My Costa Rica jersey was everything the guy promised, I have to admit - and a fake at the same time.
You can always email the seller a question. If they lie about the authenticity of the jersey, they will be kicked off ebay quickly.
Also, I bought a great jersey as advertised only to be reminded that XL jerseys - even those made by the name brand outfitters - are different sizes in different markets. Someone offering the real deal, even in the USA, may have picked up the jersey abroad. Ask if it is US or European XL/L/whatever.
I picked up a great Scotland Euro 96 jersey, NWT, for $25 earlier this year. I also picked up a nice NWT Reyna USNT jersey for slightly more. Just be careful, but happy bidding!

Soccer replicas aren't that expensive
At MLB.com, the cheapest Yankees replica jersey costs $74.99: http://shop.mlb.com/dr/sat/ec_MAIN.Entry16?SP=10024&PN=28&xid=34935&V1=30012595&V2=30012595&V3=1&V5=&V4=10&S1=&S2=&S3=&S4=&S5=&DSP=0&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=76650
At NBA.com, the "replicas" start at $44.99 but "authentics" will set you back around $140-$150: http://store.nba.com/category.aspx?category=247&sid=2fb2ce8e57ad4e35a229ec469248d910
NFL replicas start at around $75: http://www.nflshop.com/home/default.cfm?SID=7193
So in comparison, soccer jerseys aren't that expensive (though they do change styles more often than Big 4 US sports).

The SE Asian jerseys on eBay are high quality knockoffs. You can find differences if you have an authentic shirt to compare it to. The biggest difference is the actual material of the shirts. You can really tell on the Kappa knockoffs because the material doesn't stretch like the real ones. Same with Nike's Dri-Fit. Plus, they only sell one size.
Every once in a while one of them will sell a player replica and have their name spelled wrong. Classy.

I've bought plenty of vintage Liverpool and US jerseys on eBay from fans over the years, but never the SE Asia knockoffs.

You can find NHL "shells" for as low as $50 if you look around but most replica are in the $65-80 range. Authentics run around that same $150 mark as in the NBA.
The interesting thing, and this is true with MLS, is that you can often find game worn jerseys at auction cheaper than you can buy the replica.
I had someone (thanks Dave) pick up some Wizards jerseys at a charity game last fall for me. I got three long sleeve, game worn, jerseys - home/away/goalkeeper for $160 total. I can't recall the last time I saw either a long sleeve or GK replica for sale. I do remember some early on in MLS, but not recently.
Hmmm, I wonder if I'm the only one with both Meola and Oshoniyi Wizard jerseys. Perhaps I should hunt down Garlick, Harrington (shudder), and Amman shirts.
I've bought a bunch from "adkinson" on ebay. I've compared a few to jerseys bought from stores and there in no difference. They are identical. They even come with all the tags. I think they might be stolen rather than knock offs.

I imagine there are pirates roaming the seas looking for ships carrying Nike and adidas replicas. I have visions of a Thai pirate with a wooden leg, a parakeet and a Man U jersey.

We needed an extra suitcase...:)
That said, it depends on the auction. At that event (Carey Talley's Le Bonheur All-Star Game in Memphis), the jerseys started at $50 or something, and the big names (Donovan, Mathis) went for around $200. At the Screaming Eagles Capitol Soccer Ball, jerseys will start around $150 and have gone for much more.

I bought a RUI COSTA, AC MILAN jersey on EBAY. I paid about a 1/3 of the cost(shipping included). Tags were included, very nice quality. I bought from "salabook".....it took about 3-4 weeks to get it from Thailand
