SVS&E Gets Another Team

...unfortunately, it's a lacrosse team.

Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, which divested itself of involvement in the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS after the 2001 season, is buying the Albany Attack of the National Lacrosse League and moving the team to the Compaq Center for the 2004 season.

They say they need 8,000 a game to break even, and have 554 requests for season tickets already.

You think MLS players don't make much money? NLL guys make like $18,000 a year tops.

When th league first started (and Baltimore had a team), I knew a handful of guys who played. My high school was one of the top teams in the country 83-86.

One guy was working with a broker or something in Philly and played with the team up there. He was getting paid per game at that point (this was in 91).

His take was that his "salary" covered most of his car payments for the year, he went out drinking with guys he knew for ages after practice and he got tolay out some wicked hits on old buddies in the games, then go out drinking.

Most of these guys play NLL and MLL for the hell of it, not for the cash. But moving teams to places like San Jose baffles me. Because the players aren't concentrated there. At least Denver has some lacrosse culture going back to the Vail Classic and all.
