I finally got around to posting this. (I had been real busy and that is why I have not been able to post stories and pics, but will get around to it).

A couple months back I ran across Horacio Casarin's autobiography. Towards the end of the book, he was talking about some of his memoirs and mentioned an anecdote regarding famous Chiva player, Jaime "Jamicon" Villegas.

I scanned it (hope it doesnt resize the jpeg).

basically, Villegas comments that he was grateful that he had crossed paths with Horacio Casarin. During the II Panamerican games, both Villegas and Casarin shared rooms. Villegas brought it to Casarin's attention that he was illerate. In disbelief, Casarin taught Villegas how to read and write. He taught him how to do so in 4 months.

It saddened me to read a quote from Villegas when he said, "when you are hungry, letters dont make sense."

------

I make no secret of it, I've always been critical of Villegas for his inability to adapt to different environments. Since i can remember, I've always read anecdotes and what not about him taking his radio to Europe, turning on the radio only to be dissapointed that Mexican music was not airing to complaining about not eating pozole.

Reading that really puts it into perspective what an immigrant goes through when going into any new country.

Just sad and wanted to share with you guys this bit.

That's definitely a moving story.

Reminds me of the three years during college I was in a volunteer literacy program at a library in L.A county. Paired with a West Indian one year, a Guatemalan the next, and a Jamaican for the last year.

Very rewarding. Especially the last year, because the guy was in his 70's and it was touching that he still had the motivation to want to learn instead of just forgetting about it.
