In light of some of the British press making Real Madrid out to be possibly the best team of all time, I was just wondering who everyone else considered deserved that title.

The obvious contenders are Real Madrid 56-60, Milan 89-95, Ajax Early 70s, Santos early 60s, Honved early 50s.

Who would you go for and why?

Personally I favour the milan team of the early 90s, but as they are the only side I've seen in the flesh it is clearly slightly biased.
Milan were just so complete back then and contained in Baresi, Maldini, Rijkaard, Gullit and Van Basten 5 all time greats. To add in such players as Desailly, Donadoni, Papin, Costacurta, Savicevic, Boban amongst others made the teams so special.
The season of 92-93 when they were undefeated in an entire league season and lost 1-0 to Marseille in the European Cup final was one game from perfection.

Real Madrid of this year is perhaps the best ever in terms of most glamour players. Best on the pitch is another story. They might crash to Juventus and then we won't be discussing this year's Real side at all.

I nominate Liverpool of the 70s and 80s.

Juve in 96. Zidane, Del Piero, Vieri, Boksic, Deschamps, and Angelo Peruzzi at his absolute prime. Well, maybe they weren't the best ever but that team was my favorite Juve squad ever.

Juve 96 was very strong. In 97 even stronger IMO. Great team.

The current Real Madrid can become the best ever. But they need to win something.... they need a defined moment to claim the title. The 2002 CL title could have been their definding moment, but after they sign Ronaldo, the soccer historians might want more than one more CL title with Ronaldo on the team.

Sacchi's Milan, a group of top class players playing as a team as if they had a single brain.

Milan - Real Madrid 4-0, Milan - Juventus 4-0 etc.

capello's Milan was surely still the best team around but sacchi's one was pure magic.

I can remember well a Cagliari - Milan... (at the stadium) 1st half 1-0, 2nd half 1-4.
When they began to play (end of the first half) I thought "My God!"... and then I enjoyed the show... when you lose against a supernatural team there's little to be sad of.

Santos becos they were simply the best for a decade and took on EVERYBODY!

Santos and Real only met once during their respective reigns and Real won 5-2?...but have refused to play Santos since.

Another candidate would have to be Independiente de Avellaneda of the 70's

Real Madrid 1998 -¿?

In this period the Real Madrid has won:

- 3 champions leagues (1998,2000,2002)
- 2 intercontinental cups (1998,2002)

They are clearly the best team in the last 5 years.

Stalybridge Celtic 2000/20001
- Unibond Champions

Real Madrid 2002-2003. Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Raul, and a few others.

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of the ban on English clubs from Europe (other than the actual tragedy) is that Liverpool and AC Milan never got to play each other in the late 80's.

AC Milan probably would have beaten Liverpool, but we will never know for sure and Barnes, Rush etc facing Gullit and Van Basten would have been a sight to behold.

WBA 1978

Regis, Cunningham, Robson, Brown, Statham, Batson, Ally Brown, Roberston, Wile, Cantello

The team that won 5-3 at United in the greatest game of all time.

Real Madrid of the late 80s....those spectacular 'chilena' (bicycle-kick) goals of Hugol were a sight of pure art.

fixed your post slightly - sorry man, the rossoneri were incredible in 1995 but only one side can be considered the aces for that season: AJAX - that group was the best ive ever seen a lot of - if not for the dutch PK curse, theyd have repeated in '96 against a fantastic juve side - in fact, ill go so far as to say that '95 AJAX is largely responsible for my love of the game

my top 5 (for what thats worth considering my age)

1- AJAX 71-73
2- milan 89-94
3- liverpool 77-84
4- bayern munich 74-76
5- real 56-60

id have AJAX 92-96 and real 98-? just beyond that group - too bad AJAX 95 and real 2003 will never get a chance to play each other! - that match mightve ended with a basketball score, but what a contest it would be

The players aren't that famous but you can't argue with the domination of Tottenham Hotspur's 61 team. First team to do the English double in the 20th Century, won the league by a blowout. And they did this using a squad of 18 players, 3 of those players making only one appearance.

They were also the team that invented the modern English game.
