I only have experience of the Calgary Flames about how North American teams are run since I lived there for a while back in the day, I guess this doesn't really entitle me to classify MLS teams in the same way. So this is where my opinion comes from, sorry if it's totally wrong.

The only local talent in the Bolton team is Nicky Hunt, and he's shit. But you should be more familiar with John Cunliffe from Chivas.

I think the point is many American towns won't have a professional team, so if they have a serious interest in the sport it's logical that they have a team to support that they can watch on TV, and I guess idolise. You're not exactly going to go round with some amateurs name on the back of your shirt.

Many people from England keep saying " you have to support your local team" and all that shit. But so many English people don't even do this, look at the amount of United fans who are like "I support Man U because my Uncles best friend drove through Manchester this one time." And most people local teams are not even professional teams, I mean the teams closest to me are The Old Boltonians(they play on the oldest football pitch in the world), Turton FC(they are one of the oldest teams in the world), and then some other shit, then Blackburn Rovers then Bolton. Are you seriously suggesting I should support these teams over Bolton?

Also look at the amount of English that will only follow the NBA or NHL even though we have our own leagues of those sports over here but they won't support them.

In my opinion you should just try watching a few games to decide who to support. I know I'm a United fan so that makes me a "glory hunter" but I don't care what others think. Just support the team that feels right for you. If you enjoy watching Arsenal, then choose Arsenal. If you like watching Fulham, then choose Fulham. Support who you want to support and don't let others influence your decisions. The game is meant to be fun, so have fun when choosing a team.

You should just play the game, get signed for a team and then support them. Until then support noone.

I agree with this. You don't choose a team, a team chooses you. You may be attracted to team because of a style of play, a great game, or a favorite player. But if you watch enough games, you'll find that you have a team before you know it.

Just make sure you catch at least a few Arsenal games...you may as well watch a team that plays attractive football ;)

One thing about "glory hunting" is that if an American wants to choose a British team to watch, he/she would likely prefer to pick one that was on TV fairly often and that immediately narrows it down to the Premier League and Celtic/Rangers (PPV and Celtic-online options). That can be mistaken as glory hunting.

From there on out, you kind of need to either pick a team from a city you visited and liked or just through feel. For me, it was definitely the latter. I originally went with the first option and picked Chelsea because they were the closest to the hotel I stayed at when I was in London for three weeks (definitely NOT glory hunting, just blind luck). But they just didn't do anything for me and I started looking again and Celtic just felt right (regardless of - with the exception of Rangers - the complete lack of competition in the SPL lol).

If you're looking right now, do keep watching games, researching teams/cities and a team will "feel right" and then run with it. Just make sure you are picking that team regardless of the team's current level of success (i.e. if you pick Manchester United, don't abandon the team if they somehow start hitting hard times and are in the bottom half of the standings). Of course, that's just my preference, but that's the best way you can be a "supporter" - supporting the team through thick and thin.

On another note, I completely agree with the support-your-local-team argument. But I prefer British football for a number of reasons and, even if I were to support a professional American club, the closest one is four hours away. If I happened to live in Falkirk, Aberdeen or Inverness, I would absolutely support the local club over Celtic. Heck that even goes for Dumbarton, Stranraer or St. Johnstone.

Ebbsfleet United of course! :)

But apart from that I'd reccommend Arsenal. I have followed the English football all my life, and never really supported a single team ... i prefer to support all the English teams when they play in Europe :). But Arsenal are a great team to watch under Arsene Wenger, they haven't been as mercenary in their dealings as Chel$ki or Man U, and they play the most attractive football in the league when they are on their game ... plus if you ever visit the UK, chances are you will be based in London, so you will have a chance to watch them.

I've been a student all over the south of England, and had lots of friends who came to study for a year ... and despite being here for a year, they never once got to see Liverpool or Man Utd play (most supported one or other of those two clubs). It's worth considering.

Being from the US, it would be good to choose a team that has alot of couverage so you can follow your team easily. Saying this, pretty much all teams have internet couverage, and many helpful people post match coverage on youtube, BBC website has SPL highlights aswell.

I support Forest, I'm lucky to live in Nottingham so can goto games. But as with most teams, you can subscribe to there "World" site on the official site for their team.

The team you support has to be right for you, no-one can give you advise that you can really follow as it is personal to you. SOme people like to support the underdog, some like to follow a team with flare, some with passion. Some, it boils down to there kit colours!

I just want to second this point. If you decide to support a Football League team (FL Championship, One or Two), a lower-level EPL team or some SPL teams like Hearts and Rangers, you can listen to every competitive game live. It is incredible the number of games to choose from every day at 7 a.m. PT (3 p.m. U.K. time). Higher-level EPL teams and Celtic will also have their own audio packages you can subscribe to (Celtic actually offers live video for about $21/month - audio packages are much cheaper).

Completely agree. I actually wanted to follow a lower-level team, like Plymouth Argyle, but Celtic just felt right. I also liked the combination of a team in Scotland (my last name dates back to Scotland) with Irish roots (have always liked Ireland). There are many other reasons, but bottom line, it just felt right.

I'm an American who just recently got into EPL football. I had NO idea who to root for so I browsed the big four. I didn't want to be a Manchester United fan, because to me they are the Yankees of the EPL. Arsenal and Chelsea didn't interest me much and my favorite player, Fernando Torres, plays for them. I know it wasn't the best reason to root for them, but they're fans are so I great. I absolutely love "You'll Never Walk Alone." As a fan of Liverpool, I truly feel like I am in a brotherhood, side by side with fellow Liverpool fans. Not to mention, Stephen Gerrard is another extremely fun player to watch.

Every now and then I feel guilty because I hopped on one of the top four teams in the EPL, but then I listen to "You'll Never Walk Alone" and realize that Liverpool is the best. Everything about the team is great.

I have absolutely no problem with somebody selecting one of the "Big Four" as long as you will support the club no matter how they do on the field, even if the bottom drops out and they get relegated.

And, as a Celtic fan, I completely understand where you're coming from, both in terms of "You'll Never Walk Alone" and picking one of the most popular teams in Britain to support.

Or you could just go to Blockbuster and rent Carousel then pick an entirely different team to support.

I am sure that the more you follow the team the more you will feel you belong. Welcome to the fold, and feel free to add your opinions in the Liverpool Forum.
