Yes, 2008.

Down most of the way in the article it says the U.S. would, of course, be invited.

They also talked about this last night on FSE's Interliga show as if it were a fact and definitely going to happen.

So that's two shaky sources--La Opinion and the Pereira sidekick of Jorge Ramos.

Evidently, the rumor goes, it's for CONMEBOL's 80th anniversary, but it's really about the $$$ that Mexico brings them.

Very shakey sources for sure...but agree the $ will be the driving force behind this move if it does indeed happen..

that would be great if it happened though. The more tournaments the better for our boys.

If this is officially announced very soon, would anyone else like to see us withdraw from this years tourny to play in next years?

Very doubtful. They forced CONMBEOL to uninvite Costa Rica so that we could play in the 2007 event, so if we pulled out, the CONMBEOL is eff'd on its teams.

Also the draw for the 2007 tournament is being held on the 6th of February, so USSF would have just over a month to pull out, so if this isn't announced until April or so, they really haven't a chance to withdraw.

Are there seedings of any sort for the 2007 tournament draw or is everyone thrown in one hat?

Good for Mexico and good for the Copa America really. If you look throughout the tournament's history every CONMEBOL team has hosted once now with Venezuela, so I guess it's Mexico's turn as a thank you to their participation, and of course for the pesos.

Here's hoping the USA hosts in 2011/2012. (that's a half-joking, half-serious comment)

I wager it will happen in the next decade.

Just way to good of an opportunity for SA to pass up.

I seem to remember seeing that they do have some seeding. Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela are the seeds I think.

Another La Opinion rumor...

The Title should read "La Opinion Rumor: Copa America 2008 in Mexico". Then we'll know not to waste our time.

Correct. The speculation is that the U.S. will end up in Brazil's group, and Mexico in Argentina's. I hope this is true b/c Brazil's pool is supposedly playing its first-round games in the eastern part of the country. I want to stay the hell away from Caracas.

Maybe this will be the first step to combining the 2 confederations. I believe both COMNEBOL and CONCACAF would benefit by being 1 large confederation similar to UEFA, both economically and competitively.

Membership would be roughly equal to UEFA
UEFA has 52 member nations. CONCACAF has 40 member nations and COMNEBOL has 10 member nations. The combined size should be able to lobby for 8 full slots for each World Cup

Economics
Bringing in the money from the CONCACAF region should provide a boost for COMNEBOL.

COmpetition Level
CONCACAF TEAMS (US, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica) would all benefit from the better competition.

gulati, when confirming the usa acceptance to 2007, said usa had also commited to a 2nd copa america also....

a copa in mexico before wcq begins would be great for newer usa players never exposed to altitude....be it guadalajara or the district federal

Exactly. A Copa America in Mexico would be the greatest thing for WC qualifying.

.

Who is this "They" you speak of? Seems that only FIFA could force Conmebol to do anything.

This would make sense for 3 reasons:

1) $$$: It bulk up the financials of the tournament.

2) Euro 2008: This aligns the tournament with Euro 2008. I think it also sets the table for 4 years between each Copa. Direct competition, big names. Its a direct challenge to Euro 2008, and I think raises the profile of a tournament that has seemed a bit extraneous at times. Especially the competition occuring a year before the WC in the midst of WC qualies.

3) CONCACAF: I think CONMEBOL and the big nations in CONCACAF would welcome a merge. The main barrier I think remains in the form of Warner's little island cabal. In the meantime via CONMEBOL they will continue to do the end around by bringing North American teams to CONMEBOL tournaments.

That doesnt mean it will happen, just that I can see the logic in such a move.
